This is true over a number of issues in which Fundamentalists, particularly in the South and Midwest, seek to limit the constitutional freedoms of anybody who doesn't agree with them over abortion, gay rights, war in Iraq etc. Surely they threaten the very essence of liberty in America?

Pastor Billy says: take the existence of Southern Baptists do you know why they have this denomination? They broke from the Northern Baptists because of the Northern position on slavery.

As far as abortion, gay rights and war in Iraq these are against the moral law the problem you are describing isn't an infringement on constitutional freedoms but the fact that fundamentalists as with other Christians, Jewish and Muslims are expressing there own rights under the Constitution. You need to accept their right to do so. If however in doing so these fundamentalists act or speak in a zealot like manner and forget the core reality of the religion is love well than you have a case for hatred and bigotry.

First off not all Fundamentalist are Evangelical and not all Evangelicals are Fundamentalists. Thus your question really reads Why does Christianity in the USA generate so much hatred and bigotry?” You then go on to exclude the South and Midwest, which last I checked were part of the US. Your question now becomes, “Why does Christianity generate so much hatred and bigotry in parts of the US?”

I submit that the hatred and bigotry is generated by others and aimed at Christians rather than by Christians. This is particularly true in certain areas of the US most notably the Left Coast (i.e. CA, OR and WA) and the other Left Coast (i.e. NY, NJ, MA and most all of New England).

Moreover, contrary to popular belief abortion and homosexuality are NOT Constitutional Rights, but don’t take my word for it read it yourself. The War on Terrorism, of which Iraq is a part, does turn on the Constitution. That falls squarely in the section pertaining to the Executive Branch (That is the Presidency for those of you who mouth platitudes having not read the document).

Further I would posit that Liberty is a product of Christianity and can not exist without it. There is not and never has been and can never be a Nation that is free that does not have a Judah-Christianity basis.

They do. It's sad it has come to this. When the United States was founded, the framers of the Constitution tried to guarantee the religious warfare which had plagued Europe for almost nine centuries (and was still recent history to them) would never happen here. The fundamentalists in the Constitutional Congress tried their best to make Christianity our state religion, but fortunately saner heads prevailed. They have been trying for the last 231 years to establish a state religion, to no avail. Now they are working at low levels, infiltrating school boards, city councils and state legislatures. They have been fairly successful so far. They over-reached in Dover PA, when they attempted to force the teaching of "Intelligent Design" (Creationism in sheep's clothing) into the city schools. Fortunately, they were voted out by the freedom-loving Americans of the city. But watch closely: The recent attempts to prohibit same-sex marriage, the ongoing fight against women's rights, and civil rights reverses proves they are still working hard. Those of us who truly love our freedom and respect our Constitution need to remain vigilant.

I agree with you with the exception of your statement "particularly in the south and mid-west"....very judgmental statement.

I have lived in the south all of my life and I have visited other northern states and Canada for extended periods of time and I can tell you that the general population in those areas have more bigotry than any southern area I know. People have a negative outlook about the south because the media makes us look stupid; they think we all have outhouses and intermarry. Perhaps you should turn your face to Utah and the Mormons; or to Connecticut and New York; or Montana/Wyoming/Nevada for the sight of a few "skin heads" who think only white people will go to heaven. I think this way of thinking is extremely dangerous in our country....as is classifying a whole group of warm-hearted and accepting people because of ignorant media stereotypes.

Appreciate your asking this question and giving me something to think about. Godloveya.

Actually, the truth is, God has spared the United States from His wrath because of the Christians that you hate so much.
He has withheld His anger because His followers also dwell here. Once we are gone, God will then allow His wrath to fall on this country. Christians do not instigate the hatred, it is those who hate God who are stirring up trouble, in this country and in the world. They are animals who cannot control their own sinful appetites and they want the rest of the world to not condemn them, rather, they want others to join them in their sin and call it acceptable. Your perception of Liberty is warped and sinful. Liberty is not a license for everyone to do anything they want, whenever they want. Liberty is the freedom to worship God and not live under oppression.
If everyone in this country worshipped and believed in Christ Jesus, this country would be flourishing and would not be at war. There would be no Murder, Rape, Sexual abuse, Swindeling and there would be less need for police officers and judicial employees, jails, counselors, etc etc.
The kind of Liberty you refer to is costing this country hundreds of billions of dollars a year in added expenses, money that could go to feeding the poor around the world.
Think of the expense incurred each year because of homosexuality and abortion. This country cannot afford to fund the sinful sexual appetites of the people who demand this kind of Liberty.
The best Liberty is in knowing Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior. Praise The Holy Lamb Of God !!!

Christians mean well when they do something. I don't like abortion because it is about basically killing your own child, basically punishing them for something they had no control over. I don't think there is any mother who really wants to live with that- abortion is bad for the baby and the mother. For homosexuality, homosexuality causes STDs, and who wants to live with those on purpose. Homosexuality is a choice, you aren't born homosexual. It is a choice, and Christians can't stop anyone from making that choice or any other choice, but we don't want homosexuals to live a painful life because of an unnatural lifestyle they are choosing. I don't entirely agree with the war in Iraq, and I definitely don't think every Evangelical Christian does. We aren't trying to threaten liberty or hurt people, we want to help. I wish people would see Christians for who they really are, people who care about what God wants us to do first, and they also care about all the people of the world. Not all Christians follow this, but the best ones do. God bless.

Because many of us equate Evangelical Christianity with those sleazy guys on TV trying to get money from people. They will do anything to get the money out of poor people-any gimmick they can come with. They tend to try and tell everyone what to do and how to do it. If a person doesnt beleive their way they call us Sinners. AND they are trying to take over the US with thier Christian Coalition -pretty soon they will try to make it a state religion then we will be in trouble~~!!!

I have to agree. People originally fled to this land to avoid having a religion that the did not believe in imposed on them, and the Constitution was written specifically to prevent the same thing from happening here. Now we have people trying to break down those protections so that they can be free to impose their religion on others.

Evangelical christians are seeking to force people to live in accordance with their religion, by trying to ban music and television shows they deem offensive, trying to ban abortion because they think it's wrong, and trying to use their political influence to legislate morality. They even attack science in an attempt to teach their religion to our children in school. It's a greater threat than terrorism, because this is an attack from the inside, and it's being perpetrated by our own citizens.

It really lends credibility to the axiom "those who forget the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them."

Duh Gee Tennessee, the liberties in AMERICA you speak of were based primarily on freedom of religion. Remeber Mayflower, settlers, mean king who wouldn't let them practice their own religions.
Now I agree that there are extremists that think if you don't put money in their plate on Sunday it's straight to hell with ya. But think about the middle east, would you rather have someone yellin' y'all goin' ta hell....on the street corner or puttin' a bomb in the mall.. Hmm I'll go for the street corner guy. Those "insurgents" are just misguided folks in their religion that feel they are right and they will send ya to hell.

What you give out, you recieve! Try giving out love and non-judgement for a change and start treating (so-called non-believers) as less than human. They're not necessarily non-believers but believers that don't necessarily believe in the exact same path to heaven as the evangelicals do.
