Here are some examples of special pleading. See if you can figure out why it's a spurious form of argumentation.

Example: "Cocaine use should be legal. Like all drugs, it does have some adverse health effects, but cocaine is different from other drugs. Many have benefited from the effects of cocaine."

Example: "I know you think that I should be giving my money to the poor, but you've never been rich before. There are things about wealth that you don't understand."

Example: "I know the idea that ball lightning is caused by ghosts makes no sense to you, but that's only because you're human. Humans cannot understand supernatural phenomena."

Example: "The human eye is far too complex to have evolved from a simpler system, therefore it must have had a more complex creator. That creator would be God. No god doesn't need a creator ibecause he isn't bound by the laws of the universe. He exists outside of time."

Can someone explain this phrase:

"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

Does it mean that man also needs to be fed spiritually in order to also live?

No offense meant here.

I'm looking for an answer with a little more depth than "The Bible says so," or, "I just know."

How do you know you picked the right one?
Did you visit a variety of churches and study different religions before making your decision?
Did you read the texts of other beliefs and read texts which discredit various beliefs?
Were you introduced into your religion and knew from that moment that it was the only one for you?

Please....so many of you are positive you are in the right religion. I just want an indepth answer as to why you know you're right.

Remember....I'm not trying to offend. I am just looking for a good, well thought out explanation.

that the bible was written by man and has no grounds for proof of divine inspiration.

but it is ok for you to say that the bible is the ultimate single truth of the world. and that all other religions no matter their age or spiritual bleiefs. are the work of your own dark god Satan. and that all followers of every other religion are going to burn in a hell that was made up by your religion?

and you wonder why there are people that do not believe in god, or gods?

The Orthodox have been separated from the Catholic Church for a thousand years. If Christians only believed Mary was ever-virgin because 'that wicked Catholic Church lied and kept the Bible from away from them', why does Orthodoxy teach the same thing?

The Great Commission is a Christian thing, where Jesus bade believers to spread the faith. This question isn't about just Christiandom, but to any other religion that requires its followers to spread their faith.

The fundamental conflict is that a devout person would consider the greatest act of friendship to be bringing the non-believing friend into the fold while the differently-believing friend might find that kind of behavior harassing and the basic core of the believer's faith (which generally ascribes the non-believer a negative status such as consigned to hell, a heretic, a heathen, or somehow inferior and/or unacceptable) hurtful and insulting. Religions that require proselytizing don't permit tolerance of other beliefs.

To rephrase: How can people of different religious beliefs find ways to be friends without either side having to apologize or set aside their religious beliefs, particularly when one or both belief sets require the believer to try to convert the other?
