Christ said that to look at a woman with lust was like committing adultery in your heart.
He was saying not every sin constitutes an exterior act. Some sins are confined to the heart and mind and can do as much damage to our soul.
Jesus was also showing that there is a sequence of events that leads up to adultery. First; Looking upon another man's wife; second; lusting after her, third; committing adultery with her.

You might be referring to Jesus' Sermon on the Mount:
27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
(Matthew 5:27-28)
There is also reference to "spirtual adultery" in the Old Testament, referring to how Israel would "go a whoring after other gods" - meaning that they stopped worshipping God, and began worshipping "other gods". Note that many of the non-Israelite religions included adulterous practices as part of their worship, "whoring after other gods" may have been literal.
References to this can be found in:
Exodus 34:15-16
1 Chronicles 5:25
Judges 2:17
Hosea 9:1
Judges 8:33

I think looking upon another woman with lust is still sexual infidelity, and while it is considered comitting adultery in your heart and in no way justifiable, I don't think it can be accurately termed as "spiritual adultery." I think lust is just plain old "physical adultery"
I think Emmy hit the proverbial nail in the head. Spiritual adultery is when you rely on another person for that for which you are to rely on your spouse.

I interpret spiritual adultery as "modifying" parts of God's word, to suit our lifestyles. Justifying what we may call "little" sins, of no real consequence, the smallest thing we do that we know is sinful, pinching pens from work, lying to prevent confrontation about something, cheating, gossiping about something, God doesn't differentuate between these and the evils of someone like Hitler... Sin is sin!! and by allowing these little things to get by as being OK, we are adulterating our spiritual growth and relationship with God.... Being too simplistic??.... I'll be very interested to read other answers and hopefully grow my own knowledge.....

Two things: you have committed more than your body to your wife--giving any part of you that is reserved for her (i.e. sharing your fears and joys with another woman, making another woman your companion, financing another woman's dreams) is part of adultery. Spiritual adultery is alluding to people giving their heart to something or someone other than God, attempting to serve two masters, or relying on someone else for the help God gives.

As Christians we "the Church" are the bride "wife" of Christ.
If we follow someone or something other than Christ our Husband we commit adultery against Him.

"Adultery" means being involved with more than the one to whom you are married.
Spiritual adultery refers being unfaithful to G-d, & lusting after other things. Putting them before G-d & allowing them to take center stage.

When you become a Christian you do the will of God.......like what Jesus said" I come to do not my will but the will of the one who sent me".....and part of that will is to preach the Kingdom of God.........like in the Lord's prayer........thy Kingdom come and so forth........So we should put our trust in that Kingdom..............by putting our trust in man's government we in a sense commit adultery with that government.........Jesus said to be no part of this world........so by being part of this world we commit adultery.
