"Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man"
So we know it refers to a man. The Bible was written for the common person - what is the only numerical alphabet that most people can understand - not Hebrew, and not Greek - try Latin: DCLXVI. When you include the "seven hills" (Rev 17:9), a "throne and great authority" (Rev 13:2), etc it becomes pretty obvious!

The number, 666, has three places. The first place, furthest to the left is called, the hundreds spot. We know that there are 6 of those hundreds. That is why the first number is a 6. The middle number is called, the tens spot. In this case, an old term is used. The word, score, means twenty. So, we know that there are 3 of those twenties. That makes the middle number a 6 also. The last number, the furthest to the right in the ones column. We know that there are 6 of those as well. Therefore, the number on the farthest right is also a 6. It is the number of that particular man, not every man. The Bible uses language that was spoken back in the 1600's. So, they did not just come out and say, 666. Revelation is a prediction of coming events that will take place at the end times. This is not political in nature.

Recently, many people speculated that there was a connection to June 6, 2006 - 06/06/06. However, in Revelation chapter 13, the number 666 identifies a person, not a date. Revelation 13:18 tells us, "This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666." Somehow, the number 666 will identify the antichrist. For centuries Bible interpreters have been trying to identify certain individuals with 666. Nothing is conclusive. That is why Revelation 13:18 says the number requires wisdom. When the antichrist is revealed (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4), it will be clear who he is and how the number 666 identifies him.

Now the number of man in scripture is "six". You're aware with Biblical numerics that each number has a significance. The number seven is the number of completeness. The number six is short of completeness, incomplete man. The number twelve is the number of human government, and number thirteen is the number for Satan.
Or:
His number is 666: Does this tell us who the beast is, by figuring out the numerical value of a name and seeing if it adds up to 666? Using this method, many candidates for Antichrist have been suggested through the ages, such as the Pope or the Papacy, John Knox, Martin Luther, Napoleon, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, and so forth. But the schemes for unlocking the number of the beast are as confusing as they are endless.

It works out to be the representation of the name Nero Caesar in a way that wasn't completely uncommon at the time... Nero, of course, was famously violent and murdered and tortured Christians, and just about anyone else it pleased him to torture, as well as inspiring the book of Revelations, and several more intelligent works (those of Seneca).

With all due respect, that may be the Christian understanding, but it is not the understanding of all of mankind.
Six is "Imperfection", the number for humanity
666 is the unevolved animalistic force affecting the triune nature of humans (body, mind, spirit)
The mark of the beast is simply the unevolved animalistic force within humans

You need to read the Masters book. Aleister Crowley, The Beast, 666.
You need to go to the crossroads of old highway 66 and highway 6 in Texas and just stand in the middle of it until you are raptured.
666 is a wonderful number of Beers to start a toga party.
If you stand on your head you can promote yourself to 999.
Thy house doth fall in disrespect.
Thy words do spew of offal.
Thy body fills with thy Rot.
Thou art a Troll.
Thou art a bigot.
Thou art an apostate of thine own religion.
Thy God doth abhor thee.
