My husband has recently discovered his jewish heritage and he really wants to start celebrating shabbat. My apologies if I've misspelled anything, I'm pagan and know nothing about Judaism or the Hebrew language, but I really want to support his newfound faith.

His birthday is coming up and I want to buy him all the stuff he needs to celebrate the sundown ritual before eating, I think that's shabbat, but I could be wrong. I've seen it performed before, the person lit two candles on a special condleholder and wore a special shawl and read a prayer in Hebrew.

He is Messianic Jew, if that's any help.

What I need is the correct terminolgy for the candleholder and the shawl and anything else he'll need, so I can do a search for these things. Also a good Jewish discount store would be really helpful since I don't have a ton of money. he just needs something to get started with.

Any help on this is most appreciated.

do you think its the mind playing tricks like your hallucinating... maybe you ate something or ingested something that made you hallucinate or see stuff in your dreams that you interpret as visions... or is it really a visit from those who await us after our death?

Consider the following:

Have you ever been to a gay or lesbian social club, party, bar, or sporting event? If not, why not?

Do you ever stop yourself from doing or saying certain things because someone might think you are gay or lesbian?

Do you ever intentionally do or say things to convince people that you're NOT gay/lesbian?

Do you think someone could influence another person else to change theirsexual orientation?

If you are a parent, how would you (or do you) feel about having a lesbian or gay child?

How do you think you would feel if you discovered that one of your parents, a parent figure, or a brother or sister were gay or lesbian?

Are there any jobs or professions that you think gays & lesbians should be barred from holding or entering? Which ones and why?

Have you ever laughed at or told a "queer" joke?

Can you think of three positive aspects of a lesbian or gay lifestyle?

Can you think of three negative aspects of a heterosexual lifestyle?

How come Atheism is so complicated to be ultimately defined?

Well, I think the label "Atheism" only is too broad for many of us, maybe?

Should I forgive my husband.. even though I am still angry with him? Can I forgive him if I still feel angry toward him? Is it possible to forgive if there is anger in your heart? Will forgiving him help me heal? ( don't laugh or sigh... this is a serious question!)

Could original sin be viewed as responsibility inherited--not (only?) from biblical Adam and Eve--but from our forefathers, for example, a shared responsibility for slavery or damage to the environment? After all, we feel pride when we celebrate the doings of our forefathers on the Fourth of July.

A Christian made a mildly peeved complaint here recently about atheists answering R&S questions. Why, she asked, can't these heathen leave the Faithful alone? Our interference in their lives, she contends, is unfair and undeserved.

She's presumably unaware of the extent to which religion constrains and interferes in the lives of atheists. I think she should be told.

So - can my fellow unbelievers hereabouts help by mentioning some ways - like doorstep evangelists, TV censorship, biased legislation - in which religion daily interferes in *our* lives? (I guess we can take as read all the unpleasant changes to everyone's lives since those disgruntled True Believers crashed the planes into the towers.)
