If there is a difference, what is it?

2007-01-15 13:14:26 · 4 answers · asked by Marksman 1

The people that are dieing and come back to life through medicine and say that they were going through this tunnel with light at the end of it, and they were so happy untill they were brought back. Or the man that was dieing and started screaming that it is hot and came back and explained that hell is a real place. Just thought I would see if anybody has known of this and actualy went through it?

I asked the following 2 questions:

An unmarried couple with children begins attending YOUR house of worship. How would the members react?

A gay male couple with children begins attending YOUR house of worship. How would the members react?

I rated the answers Positve (+), Negative (-), both Positive & Negative(+/-), and Neutral (O)

Here are the results:
Unmarried Couple - 29 answers, 4 thumbs up, 1 down:
+: 19 - 66%
-: 3 - 10%
+/-: 5 - 17%
O: 2 - 7%

Gay male couple - 28 answers, 2 thumbs up, 2 down:
+: 8 - 29%
-: 7 - 25%
+/-: 9 - 32%
O: 5 - 18%

(Many of the "+"s in the gay question came from non-Christians.)

How do you explain the discrepancies?

Please also include your faith tradition as a part of your answer.

Mary's identity as a prostitute stems from Homily 33 of Pope Gregory I, delivered in the year 591... Only in 1969 did the Catholic Church officially repeal Gregory's labeling of Mary Magdalene as a whore, thereby admitting their error - though the image of Magdalene as the penitent whore has remained in the public teachings of all Christian denominations. Like a small erratum buried in the back pages of a newspaper, the Church's correction goes unnoticed, while the initial and incorrect article continues to influence readers." [1.]

What a wealth of thoughtful responses to my "Am I an atheist" question (where I said I felt weird calling myself an atheist because I really don't know what theists believe in--'God' is just too vague a word.
Several responses said I was probably an agnostic, i.e. keeping on open mind on whether or not God exists. Well, not really. I've still got the problem that we're using this weird (to me) word "God" that is truly meaningless to me (as is Spiritual Entity, for instance, no offense meant).

How about assuming I'm a martian come to earth, with zero knowledge of earth culture. I've been brought up in a totally materialistic world (no spirituality, no religion, no need for a creator, no supernatural, no transcendence).

How do you go about explaining to me what you mean by God?

I remember the first Muslim woman I spoke to after 911. I asked the Muslimah why she believed and she could say nothing more than "the hijab is correct".

By the way, she referred to Bin Laden as "our puppy dog". That was right after 911 mind you...it really shocked me to hear such cultural adoration for the man.

As I learned more about Islam, I realized why she could say notning more than "the hijab is correct". You see, belief in Islam is entirely emotional. Muslims cant tell you "why" they believe. Ask them and see for yourself, I promise you will see my point.

The rituals of Islam help to create a community. This community is given an "enemy" which helps define them. Islam is essentially an entire drama and purpose created for the weak minded. Even moreso however, Islam is a pact or agreement that insecure people make. Men have greater assuance of procuring woman and insecure woman need not feel insecure in their beauty-santisied world.

I read another post regarding how we would treat a gay couple who attended our church. My first instinct is that we would welcome them in as we would any other.

However, I went back and read some posts where they would be shunned, refused communion and banned.

I am confused! If we are not sharing the love and laws of God with the ones who sin, with whom are we sharing it?

Mark 2:17 (Whole Chapter)
When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Will it be a slow descent until we realize "Oh snap, this is the apocalypse!" Or will it be like an instant thing like one day we're walking our dog and discussing who will be the next American Idol and the next the Earth is scorched.

How do atheists view death? I mean, what if an atheist is murdered or killed in a car crash, how do they view it? Just their body wore out or it sucks they were killed?

How do their funerals work, do they send each other cards and say sorry man, this bites or what? Thanks

What should we think of religion? Religion is sometimes the reason for Earth's problems (war, discrimination, etc..) If religion would be as good as it is supposed to be then why does it bring problems. As I have often heard: Religion keeps people from being open minded. Once again I am lost... What to think??

Thanks for giving your opinion.

I am curious as to why most people feel uncomfortable with the topic of church or God or Jesus?
Is it fear? Do they feel as though they will be judged? Is it the way most churches have portrayed the love of God?
Thanks for your feed back it is greatly appreciated.

The Romans and Greeks seemed pretty confused ...

also, why send someone else, why not just break through the clouds and tell it like it is. Im sure that if in an instant it was 10 degrees all across the world and all you cold see was a strange being talking to you ...it would make believer out of all humans.
