I have seen both. I have watched people die screaming that they are on fire. I work in the health profession. I have seen people mad because they wanted to go towards the light. I believe what they say. The ones that are brought back that said they were burning, they usually ask for a pastor.

When you die, your body is put through a lot of stress. Your brain is deprived of oxygen, which can cause hallucinations. Chemicals are being pumped through your body, in an attempt to bring you back, and electricity is being applied to your heart in an effort to make it beat again. I'm sure that the electricity has some effect on the brain, too. It comes to me as no suprise that people would hallucinate the things you describe.

John 3
12If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? 13And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
2 Corinthians 12
4How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.

That dying brain can be a tricky thing. What about the guy who was dying and was getting swallowed by a giant duck with lizard eyes?
