According to the Bible, we are to test the spirits: 1 John 4:1-3...1Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

Question 1) Given the light of this passage, why do so many Christians say that all spirits are demons come to deceive people?
Question 2) Given the command to test the spirits, why do Christians say that communicating with spirits is wrong? If there is no communication, there is nothing to test.

How does your lack of faith differ from your family's? My brother and I are always fighting and arguing about the bible and "faith". I try to end it peacefully, but there's only so many times I would allow him to tell me I'm going to hell. My parents allowed us to pick our own religion, so they don't mind at all. But my brother still condemns them because they don't go to church. Does your family question your integrity and values just because you're an atheist? Do you have a relative that just gets under your skin about this?

In his classic 1923 book, Christianity and Liberalism, the great Presbyterian scholar and Princeton Professor Jay Gresham Machen reminds us that people who deny the fundamentals of the Christian faith are not just liberal Christians; they belong to another religion entirely. When it comes to liberalism, Machen wrote, Christianity "is battling against a totally diverse type of religious belief," rooted in naturalism. Despite its use of Christian terminology, "liberalism not only is a different religion from Christianity but belongs in a totally different class of religions."

Okay, so I got a violation... I asked why curse 1 prints and curse 2 doesn't. Basically, I was an obnoxious asshat on someone's question, so he looked up my stuff & saw this question - which was clearly labeled as offensive - and reported it. No problem because it *was* in violation of the policy and I admit that I had in fact been an obnoxious asshat.

Anyway, it was all about what "bad" words would be okay and which ones wouldn't, so I knew it stood a good chance of being reported and taken down. But words are just ways of expressing oneself and I think censoring words is just one step away from censoring ideas.

The person I was an asshat to asked why we could slam the Pope but not "queers." Although I find the word "queer" offensive in this context (hence the asshattednedd), it's a good question. This is supposed to be an exchange of ideas, and if we can't express obnoxious an/or unkind ideas, are we really discussing the issues, or are we just being nice and pretending?

Well further more, there is an uproar in the muslim community overthe popes remarks. Well her was useing the tolm to express the evils of fighting. What happened you may ask, attacks on church's the killing of a nun, a nun for gods sakes. Whats is your take on the muslim ideal of peace through violence?

The Pope quoted a medieval, Christian emperor who stated that Islamic Jihad is rooted in evil. I think both the emperor and the Pope are correct. Although the comments are factually accurate, they clearly offend Muslims - who don't like having their religion and their prophet deemed evil.

After the strong reaction from Muslims, the Pope stated he did not personally agree with the medieval emperor's thoughts - he just quoted them.

Do you think God the Father shed many, many tears??? I know God the FATHER KNEW THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN TO HIS PRESHIOUS SON, but I think it was the most horrible moment, even for the eternal God. We are made in his image, so we can feel a dot of his pain, but loseing your only son for a bunch of sinful heathens must have been ALMOST unbearable, even for ALMIGHTY GOD.

Seeing as how most everyone responded, why do you think we are so willing to help an injured child of another religion, but yet we are intolerant and prejudicial to the followers of other religions?

Don't say that isn't true, because I sit on this board everyday, and it plays out before my eyes.

And I wasn't trying to play the religions against each other. I was seeking to find what is in your hearts by the answers you gave.

One has to be very careful in defining one's terms. Faith can mean many things to many people. The Bible (and therefore Christianity, if applied properly) doesn't use the term in the way you describe above. the most common synonym for the Biblical version of faith is "trust". One can say "I have faith in the President, that he'll do the right thing". This statement correctly uses the word faith, but doesn't fit into the "conclusion not based on material evidence..." definition. One makes the above statement based on his knowledge of the President's past choices, but it ultimately is a matter of trust. The Bible asks you to not believe blindly, but "test all things, hold fast to that which is good." (1 Thess 5:21) there is no objective test for God. But, there is no objective test where I worked in NY yesterday, just anecdotal evidence. By that I mean one cannot apply the "scientific method" of hypothesis, testing, data recording, and analysis to my claim of working yesterday in NY.
