Okay, so I got a violation... I asked why curse 1 prints and curse 2 doesn't. Basically, I was an obnoxious asshat on someone's question, so he looked up my stuff & saw this question - which was clearly labeled as offensive - and reported it. No problem because it *was* in violation of the policy and I admit that I had in fact been an obnoxious asshat.

Anyway, it was all about what "bad" words would be okay and which ones wouldn't, so I knew it stood a good chance of being reported and taken down. But words are just ways of expressing oneself and I think censoring words is just one step away from censoring ideas.

The person I was an asshat to asked why we could slam the Pope but not "queers." Although I find the word "queer" offensive in this context (hence the asshattednedd), it's a good question. This is supposed to be an exchange of ideas, and if we can't express obnoxious an/or unkind ideas, are we really discussing the issues, or are we just being nice and pretending?

If too many people get offended, Yahoo loses clicks because ppl will no longer participate, and since they run this board to make money they want clicks and participation, so they regulate it as loosely as they can and still make enough click to generate good revenue---it has nothing to do with morality of the verbage

If it were up to me, I wouldn't censor anyone. If somebody wants to swear their head off, great. This is the internet. Just like you have a right to walk out into a street and start swearing, you should have a right in here to use the words appropriate for the topic.

However, since Yahoo! is probably concerned with kids, this is probably why they censor certain words.

"Queer" can't be a banned word becuase it also implies the idea of "odd" or "unusual" depending on the context.

Why can we slam the Pope and not homosexuals? You can slam both - free speech implies that. Societal expectations however dictate that if you are "slamming" a certain group of people, you're actually being discriminatory and hence an enemy of cultural reformation. The Pope already has his place in society - the homosexuals are still finding their way.

For a fun closing, here's a great Penn and Teller episode on profanity:

Hi Actions do speak louder than words. Your thoughts will be your actions if you concentrate on only the good thoughts and good things. We all can have wrong thoughts but they don't mean anything unless we choose to follow through with these wrong thoughts. If you can't seem to stop thinking wrong thoughts then you might need to talk to someone to help you learn how to change the way you are thinking. It can be done. Sometimes if you act as though you are a certain way, then you will become that person in time. It takes about 2 weeks, 14 days to change a bad habit. Work on it and stop thinking so much about what you call bad thoughts and think about good thoughts! Concentrate on helping another person. Good luck in all you do. You will win because you want to win.

You do realize that there are young people present, correct? You should be able to slam anyone you want, if you're into slamming I guess. It seems kind of pointless, but… Using foul language doesn't add credibility or maturity to anything that you say. If this was an adults only site, I don't think anyone could argue that such words were an issue.

that's the world we live in. the Politically Correct world.

curse words don't mean ****. people would like to think so, but anytime a kid hears ****, *****, ****, ***, ****, ****, **** or ***** for the first time, it sticks, whether they know the meaning or not. It just reflects poorly on the parents because of society standards, and that it looks like they taught their kid those words, so they freak out and try to deprogram their kid from saying those words.

..if everyone started uninhibited language in forums and in the public square.. it would constantly degenerate into chaos and even 'violence'.. Therefore it would actually be unsafe, which is an infringement upon folk's rights.. don't ya think?
