what other versions should i look into and why? so far, i've been considering the new living translation, the king james version (naturally), and the new international version. it's a little difficult wading through my decision to obtain one of these since proponents for each have so many negative comments about the others. also, how damaging would it be to read and study them all? couldn't there be something worthwhile in each of them?

please note, that i'm not looking to thump my bible, but i have been known to find excellent philosophy and comfort in it.

(i'll be more fun tomorrow, but i wanted to ask about this today.)

I've seen some people saying the Bible says the world is flat. Could you please tell me where it says this? Chapter and verse please. Thanks

Because that must be one very large handfull. Is it really only radical Muslims fostering this violence or is there an entire sect of violence loving Muslims in pockets all over the World? Or maybe Islam really is just as these radical extremist portray it.

They say god is everywhere! Well, I say in that case Paper Bags are God they are everywhere and we all use them, but which is the God, the God of paper Bags or the God of plastic bags, the new God. These Gods feed more than 5000 but provide food for millions a sure sign a Omnipitance.

We are committed to the application of reason and science, to the understanding of the universe and to the solving of human problems. This must be combined with sensitivity and compassion

We are concerned with securing justice and fairness in society and with eliminating discrimination and intolerance to achieve an open and pluralist society

We believe that scientific discovery and technology can contribute to the betterment of human life

We are committed to the separation of Church and State

We respect the right to privacy. Mature adults should be able to exercise reproductive freedom, to have access to comprehensive and informed healthcare and to die with dignity

We believe in the common moral decencies: altruism, integrity, honesty, truthfulness, responsibility. Humanist ethics are amenable to critical, rational guidance

"Ye who are without sin cast the first stone." Is that just a way to say "Jesus gets to throw first since he's the only one of us without sin."

“This I believe: that the free, exploring mind of the individual human being is the most valuable thing in the world. And this I would fight for: the freedom of the mind to take any direction it wishes, undirected. And this I must fight against: any idea, religion, or government, which limits or destroys the individual. This is what I am and what I am about.” -- John Ernst Steinbeck, American Author

“Question with boldness even the existence of God, because, if there be one, He must more approve of the homage of reason than blind faith.” -- Thomas Jefferson, American President

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. Exalt her and she will promote you; she will bring you honor when you embrace her.” – Proverbs 4:7-8

"Lighthouses are more helpful then churches."

JOHN ADAMS
"Where do we find a precept in the Bible for Creeds, Confessions, Doctrines and Oaths, and whole carloads of other trumpery that we find religion encumbered with in these days?"

"The divinity of Jesus is made a convenient cover for absurdity."

"This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it."

THOMAS JEFFERSON
"Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear."

But I own that I cannot see ... evidence of design and beneficence on all sides of us. There seems to me too much misery in the world. I cannot persuade myself that a beneficent and omnipotent God would have designedly created that a cat should play with mice.

launch a hateful tirade against you, telling you how foolish you are because you refuse to believe what they believe or quote scripture to tell you how evil you are or best of all smugly tell you you will burn in hell for all eternity

but

At the end of the hateful tirade, they add...... "god bless you" or " I will pray for you" or even "Hugs".

Does adding something like this excuse the hate that preceded it ?

If you are going to be nasty and hateful, fine, but don't try to dress it up.

Note : I said CERTAIN christians, a definite minority.

"And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die"

I wonder which christian will be fist to excuse tis by using one of the following excuses :

1) saying that it has to be taken in context

2) saying that it has to taken in the context of the time it was written

3) saying "oh, but that's the old testament that doesn't count anymore ......... except of course when it can back up our arguments"

4) being able to randomly choose which bits are to be taken literally and which bits are to be taken as a metephor.... as the need arises.

5)You need faith

NOTE !!!! I AM NOT ADVOCATING THE STONING OF CHILDREN BUT MERELY CHECKING HOW CHRISTIANS WILL TRY TO DEFEND THE NASTY PARTS OF THAT FAIRYTALE BOOK THEY HOLD SO DEARLY

PS. Iwonder how long it will take for some fundie to gwet this question removed ?

I asked :

"Christians, what type of stones should I use when stoning my unruly child in accordance with the bible ? "

as a way of pointing out the pure ridiclous nature of much of the bible's content and some crazy fundamentalist has it removed.

What is it with this fear of questioning and enquiry ?

Should I just shut up and say nothing when I come across horrible violence in the bible ?

I sit that they know that if even one part of their bible is shown to be ridiculous.... the whole thing crumbles ?

I love God. I do, he's done so much for me and everyone else. And He always will. But is it wrong to get saved from your fear of hell? and continue your faith like that? For some reason I don't have the desire i wish i did.

some of my Jewish people think Isaiah is a liar about the messiah Jesus and his fulfillment of Moses blood atonement needed to forgive sins-Leviticus 17 vs 11
Isaiah 52 vs 13-5 vs 12 "He shall be exaulted, but first marred more than any man (WHO WAS HURT BEATEN MORE THAN ANY OTHER MAN) "and he will lay down his life as a lamb to make atonement for our sins." (Who made else was the Messiah -we have no blood atoment for sins-so EITHER ISAIAH LIED MAKING HIM NOT JEWISH-OR ANY JEWISH PERSON THAT THINKS GOD LIED TO ISAIAH-HAS A DIFFERENT GOD THEN THE GOD OF ISAIAH -right????
but besides that-Jesus? what do u think

Lucifer knew God existed when he disobeyed God.
God showing us that he exists wouLdn't take away our free wiLL, it wouLd give us the information we need to make an informed decision, in a way it wouLd give us more free wiLL.
