I am correcting an essay that I wrote for my french class and I am having trouble with one sentence in particular... I am trying to say

"It surprised me when I found that Madame has lived in Cameroon."

My original sentence was:

" Il m'a étonné quand j'ai trouvé que Madame ait habité au Cameroun."

The only thing she marked wrong was the "il" at the beginning. What should I change it to?

As accent is the determining factor, to low and high linguistic cultures, like in german! German high, is a fluid, easy but rapid speech, due to the simplification of the accent. The low german is the more gutteral brogue, with thick heavy deep, long, accentuations! This is the same patern, as the northern, united states,("high"?), and the southern united states,("low"?) ?

These are from greeting cards received by a native German speaker, and I am having trouble explaining the meaning. The two phrases are:

1. I hope that today you experience a moment where it occurs to you how much you have accomplished in your life and how great you really are.

2. Today I thought of something that made me smile...you!

Would appreciate any help. Danke!!!

It's a bit hard to explain the question, but what I mean is, for example, people say English is a hard language to learn, and Esperanto is easy. So, if you learnt English, would you be smarter for learning and speaking a harder language?

I was watching Whoopi Goldberg's Special, "The word according to Whoopi and I posed this question in my AP Lit class since we were discussing language usage in literature. Apparently, Yahoo thinks that the N word is worst, because when I wrote it in it's true form they replaced it with astricts. Note also that the,"N" word in the dictionary means an ignorant person.

I'm trying to organise a specific kind of Community event and was hoping there's one word that describes it.

I've seen documentation of one form of 50's UK Coronation event when everyone brings a table/chairs & potluck meal into the street for a community meal.

(just as a recent reference - & for any Dr Who fans it was what was being set up at the end of "The Idiot's Lantern")

Just looking for something that describes the combining of tables/chairs/potluck & community into one or two words.

Thanks in advance.

You only have to read some of the questions on here to see the quality of spelling and grammar of some of the young people using this site.

I wonder if it is 'txtin' that is causing this or a drop in education standards since I left school 15 years ago.

On a personal level, I text quite a lot myself and sometimes find my first instinct is to write the txt abbreviation instead of the proper spelling but I always make sure I don't go for the easy option.

Also I wonder if this phenomenon will eventually lead to the evolution of the written English language into something more phonetic, which is really what 'txt speak' is I suppose.

Opinions please

I've heard about William the Conqueror's invasion bringing the then-current French language to Britain, but what about the fact that the Romans occupied Britain? In other words, what percent of the Latin in English came from the occupation of Rome, and what percent came from the Norman conquest?

I'm a non-native. I have a pretty advanced level and understanding of grammar, but I make lots of careless mistakes. I don't talk as fast as some people, but I can communicate well, really love the language and I would love to show others how to speak it. I have this fear about a student speaking better than I can. Would I make a good teacher?
