What word to francophones use most commonly to asked "What?"

Ex. Your friend on the phone mumbles a sentence on the that you can't understand. You respond with: "What?"

We would say :
Pardon ? Pardon
Quoi ? What ?
Comment : meaning in that case "what ?"
Tu peux répéter ? "say again"

We would never say : encore ! Which means : more

I knew chinese language replaced into spoken the main, yet i did not understand a number of those different languages have been spoken plenty besides! (you learn some thing known) i unquestionably like each languages for the reason that they derive from one difficulty-loose language (alongside with Sanskrit and Latin). i understand a thank you to talk 4 languages, and that i'm studying Spanish- which might make 5 if I totally knew it. The 4 languages that i unquestionably do understand are English, Hindi, Bengali, and Oriya. =)

In any language you shouldn't ask "what?" if you fail to hear whats said. The correct response would be "Pardon?" or the equivalent in that particular language, so if a Frenchman says something you do not understand or hear you would say "Pardon?" with a nasalised 'n'. 'Pardon' in French is also the word for 'sorry' so in fact the meaning would translate as:

"Pardon, Je ne pas comprendez" = "Sorry I do not understand"

They'd say, "Comment?"

I know, this word means "how", but in this case, it means "What?"
