Also in German, what could I say using the perfect tense of what I did??

Like I played football...

You can say either:

Ich spielte Fussball.

Or in the perfect past tense:

Ich habe Fussball gespielt.

The difference is:
In the first case it means something you used to do in past times, maybe now not anymore. It would be clearer to say something like:

Ich spielte früher Fussball, jetzt nicht mehr.
Ich habe oft Fussball gespielt.

In the second case it wolud mean something you did once or a twice or in the recent past. You can put it also clearer by saying:

Ich habe manchmal Fussball gespielt.
Ich habe gerade Fussball gespielt, jetzt bin ich müde.

Other examples:

Meine Mutter hat Zöpfe getragen.
Wir haben uns oft getroffen.
Ich BIN in Düsseldorf geblieben.
Du BIST nach London geflogen.
Mein Freund hat auf mich gewartet.

What Beanz said, except "I played football" doesn't necessarily mean you no longer play--it could just mean you're no longer playing (I played football yesterday, as I do every Saturday). In that case it's just "Ich habe Fussball gespielt". (Or with the funny S thing, we don't use that in Switzerland.)

Your use of the past simple indicates that you no longer play. In that case, the German would be:
"Ich habe früher Fussball gespielt." / "Ich habe mal Fussball gespielt."
In contrast to the English present perfect, the German (present) perfect indicates an action completed in the past with no great relevance to the present time.
