Languages - January 2007

The culture and language of the Garfiunas in Central America. Mostly in the Belize and Honduras region. My parents are Garifuna and I wanted to see how many people out there heard of it or are Garifuna themselves.

For example, the word eat is kainin and kumain so does that mean we can use both ?

I eat = Kainin ako or Kumain ako
You eat = Kainin ikaw or Kumain ikaw

there is also another word "kumakain" ..does it mean eat too??

The letter which you have there is written in spanish, isn't it? yes, it is from my brother who is working now in Argentina. he lives there with his uncle and aunt who have a store in the capital. he writes interesting letters about the life and the customs of spanish america. my father and i want to go to south america soon. where is your father now? is he at home today? yes, he is here today becuase he is ill. generally he has to work from nine o'clock until five. my mother is at her sister's and she is going to spend a few days there. i am tired and i need to rest a while. do u want a glass of water? i believe that is cold. do you know whether mr and mrs lopez are in the city? i believe so. i know that their son robert is here now. many thanks. i must go home now because it is already five o'clock.

I'm not deaf (and dont know anyone who was born deaf) and when I read a book I hear the words in my head as I read them. I presume that I have learnt to associate the written word with the sounds I make as I speak them and I use this association to read the passages to myself.
If I had been born deaf and therefore unable to hear the sounds associated with words, would I know what to make them sound like?

I've seen signed TV programmes but the person signing the dialogue appears to finish very early on compared to the characters in the programme which leads me to assume that the signed information is a stripped back form of the spoken communication.

Does anyone know of any (born) deaf authors?
