The Southern Italians and Spaniards are considered white but we are not even though we look alike and have the same olive skin.
The truth is a southern Italian looks more like an Iranian than he does to an Irishman.

I was born and raised in Italy and came to the States about 5 years ago. What I have noticed, is that a lot of American-Italians are extremely proud to be Italian and they like to mention and underline this. They do not act like "real" Italians at all though....I find this quite amusing, because I guess they need to reassure themselves that they are Italian by acting in a "fuggedaboutit" way. I don't think that there is anything special about being Italian.....at least not any more than being from other parts of the world. Why can't we just leave the attitude behind and all be citizen of the world?

Is there anything I can do to try to impress my boyfriend's parents? They don't speak much English so I don't ever really talk to them. Can anyone reccommend something that will make them think I'm not a complete dork? All I can say is rice and big. So maybe something nonverbal would be best.

I am an 18 year old IRANian overseas student living in NOTTINGHAM,but my skin IS dark and i overheard my classmates taking behind my back GOSSIPING ABOUT ME ACCUSING me of being a terrorist!!!!!,i feel very HURT and dont know what to say to them,should i CONFRONT them why they think so?or should i keep it to myself?

When it comes to the beauty industry?

I do.
My immediate family consists of various skin tones, from what people call "high yellow" to "dark chocolate".

I personally have no color preference, but society do make it seem that the brighter you are, the more desirable you are.

I personally am medium brown, pecan brown to be exact.

I love my brown skin.
My grandfather was "high yellow".
My grandmother was dark as dark can be.

A lot of people would say: She's a beautiful dark-skinned woman, as if she's an exception to being dark-skinned.

I am wondering how many people out there think that dark-skinned people are beautiful.

I want to suggest a theory -- and want you to jump in and either agree or diasgree with me. Let me say that I am a black guy who tries to tell it as it is - without fear or favor. So, I'm checking out Kramer on YouTube and he gets pretty vile and I figure this guy must have some deep-seated racial issues. But then I ask myself, if I were a white guy, would I like black people?? I think the fair answer is that I would like some and really dislike (or probably even hate) others. Why? It boils down to content of conduct as Dr. King said. I remember when I was in school at Penn (Philadelphia) and often heard that black kids assulted white kids -- and only white kids. If I were a white kid and I got attacked, I am sure that my opinion of "gangsta-looking" black guys would drop.

My theory is that because blacks commit most crime (in proportion to population) in the US, it gives everyone a reason to dislike them - in addition to being all gangsta - which suggests violence.

I'm sitting here reading questions posted by some people and I almost want to cry...one yahoo user's name is actually mexican hater---i look at his questions and I'm shocked at what he asks. If the devil himself created Mexicans...questions about the KKK, etc. And then others who laugh along him. I'm not singling him out, there are so many hurtful questions here and I'm sad that people can be so cruel to one another. I recommend everyone watch the movie CRASH...it's so moving and maybe it can affect you as well. I just don't know how people can HATE how their hearts can be so cold....without remorse. But all I can do is pray... for all of us!!

Im half French, half Cambodian, half Vietnamese. Im half French cuz on my mom side, my grandmother and my oldest aunt is born in France (and they both speak French very fluently). Im half Cambodian cuz on my dad side (he tell me there is a Cambodian line in his family generation). And lastly im Vietnamese cuz i born the South-West of Vietnam and i speak Vietnamese fluently. I dont speak French or Khmer, i live w/ my mom since my parent divorce, and now i wanna kno am I Asian or European? plz answer honestly and maturely- excuse for my typing i just wanna type fast~

My husband is East Indian (born in the USA) and I am Mexican American. Our marriage is great, and we've been together for 10 years.
My mother-in-law, however, feels that the Indian culture is the only game in town. She continually refers to me as her son's "American" wife, even though he was raised here too! I've tried gently reminding her that my family emigrated from another country just like she did, but she skips over that part and insists that I'm white. I'm not white--how can I dispell her of that notion and remind her of the fact that I have an ethnic culture just like people from India do?
We've had some major misunderstandings which I feel come down to the fact that she is Indian and I am Latina--like oil and water. She blames everything on my being "American"--which is true, but many of my beliefs come from my hispanic upbringing. When will she respect and learn about my culture just like I've learned about hers?
