Australian Aborigines, a Tasmanian/Melanesian race, migrated from Asia approximately 40,000 years ago...at the time of European colonization in the late 18th century there were 500–600 distinct groups of aborigines speaking about 200 different languages or dialects...the name "aborigine" derives from the Latin, meaning "original inhabitants." There are approx. 400,000 aborigines living in Australia today.

There was just an interesting show on PBS about this. A researcher used DNA to determine that early man left africa about 30,000 years ago, following the shoreline through India, then into Australia.
As it was during the ice age, there was more land between india and australia, making aussie an easy 300 mile sea voyage.
I just tried to find it online but I could not.
So i guess the answer to your question is both.

They are black coloured. They are different from american indians who are farmers. Australian aborigines are traditionally hunters and gatherers, living in nomadic tribes. Most aboriginals nowdays are half white anyway and live the same as mainstream residents.
