I was born and raised in Italy and came to the States about 5 years ago. What I have noticed, is that a lot of American-Italians are extremely proud to be Italian and they like to mention and underline this. They do not act like "real" Italians at all though....I find this quite amusing, because I guess they need to reassure themselves that they are Italian by acting in a "fuggedaboutit" way. I don't think that there is anything special about being Italian.....at least not any more than being from other parts of the world. Why can't we just leave the attitude behind and all be citizen of the world?

Stop giving rude and angry answers. I AM from Italy, I love my country, but I also love America because it is so diverse and multifaceted. Why not embrace being American? I am very well travelled and I love all the countries because of their cultural diversity. Keep your closeminded nasty remarks to yourself. I only made an observation since I have noticed this about some American Italians.

Most Italian Americans are either immigrants or 1,2 or at most 3 generations from their European roots. Our traditions are still very strong as we try to assimilate. Hope we never lose them though . We have all ready sadly lost the bilingualism aspect. If you are 2 or 3rd generation and you can speak any dialect of Italian ..Kudos. I am 2nd generation and can not speak a word other than .. well you know which ones. I am upset about that.
There are ignorant people who fit into stereotypes in any culture. My Grandparents and parents are not at all like the Sopranos on TV .*** as a Ist genrationer you should be the absolutely last person to stereo type. My grandparents were articulate and cultured. My Grandfather's accent was beautiful ( I remember him best) and he spoke well and was clearly understood in English , Italian and he did ok in Spanish as well. He picked it up from a friend when they use to compare notes on how similar the 2 languages were. I think you are embarrassed by the Cavone you see around you. Don't worry it does not rub off. Stop being a snob. no one was making angry remarks to you they were only kidding you .Get a sense of humor. Now these comments are angry!! see the difference?

so, what would a 'citizen of the world' act like? Because here in america, we have attitudes dependent upon what area you were raised. Northern, southern, midwestern, californian, etc. Not mention the rest of the world. And if you don't think being italian is such a big deal, why do you care how these 'fake' italians act? I think it's great they take pride in being italian, whether you think it's natural or not. So what is it you take pride in?

although its annoying, at least they are showing pride in their heritage. a lot of people are quick to forget about their roots. at least the American Italians are proud of their Italian background (although they got it all wrong).
Blame shows like the Sopranos, Good Fellas and the Godfather. Good shows but completly wrong. haha

Everyone needs an identify. They may be expressing their Italian identity in the best way they know and the most flattering--imitation.

probably because they have nothing else to be proud of in their empty little life. also, maybe they are not too proud to be american, so they feel they have to tell everyone theyre italian. and also, most american italians are from the south as well. that might explain something.
