my son is planning to be a preacher and he preached his first time sunday night..my wife and i have a disagreement because i feel a young preacher just getting started should make lots of notes and go to the church and kind of practice or go over what he plans to say and do and then he can kind of get the feel of what should stay and what should go...my wife thinks you find a couple verses and then just go up and god will do the rest....i dont think god is going to do ALL the work...

As a child I can remember asking my parents for something, sometimes the answer was yes, sometimes the answer was no. Isn't it funny how when we pray to God and we don't get what we ask for we assume He hasn't answered our prayers.

If you want to eat, why can't you eat BEFORE you see the movie? It makes no sense to me. I was watching "The SImpsons Movie" and this girl next to me was gobbling away as if she hadn't had a decent meal in years -- hot dog, popcorn, nachos, soda, the whole works. I mean seriously, who started this tradition of eating at the movie theater and why?

Would you be willing to accept the prayer being led by a different faith each day? Since our schools are represented by many religions, would this be a fair option?

Or would you only want it if it represented your religion?

What would you suggest to someone who felt a need for community and belonging but was not religious? I understand that people really need a social network of some kind, but I have no clue where I would point some one if this ever came up. It's a shame whenever an atheist or agnostic resigns himself to sitting through a sermon every Sunday just to belong somewhere (this actually happens). There just have to be better options available.

Everyday I wake up and I see my life and sometimes I think that I can't handle it, but I know that I have a comforter. The Holy Spirit brings me peace in all situations. No matter what the situation you are facing in your life, God is bigger than it. We may seem weak when we face a situation, or come up needing. But remember 2 Chorinthians 12:9, "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness." Praise God! All we have to do is tell our souls to be still and know that He is God. Stand by His word; He is the Lord. If God be for me who can be against me? Will Christians tell themselves that even though they may seem weak and helpless in a battle, that God is here, and will never leave? God Bless you today.

So much about becoming "saved," worshipping, proclaiming Jesus as your personal savior, etc., is based upon having faith in something for which there is NO solid proof. The fact that we believe in something of which there is no tangible evidence is THE critical piece to believing in God and giving your heart to the Lord. Am I right?

God gave us free will so that we could be given the choice to believe in Him or not, correct?

If so, didn't the people who lived with Jesus and witnessed his miracles have an unfair advantage in terms of believing in God? There was no test for them. They had some pretty solid proof right in front of their eyes. Their experiences were the equivalent of being handed the cheat sheet for salvation.

What accounts for this discrepancy in fairness? I don't know a lot about the reasoning of Christian beliefs, so I ask this question honestly. No need for judgments about my afterlife. I'm just requesting an explanation. Thanks.

Let's imagine you're an adult (if you're not one already) and you were to hypothetically make it this far without even once hearing about ANY god or gods or any insitution that even resembles religion. You still retain all your other knowledge though. Just imagine for a moment.

Now, someone hands you the Bible for the first time ever. This concept is so new to you that you have to ask this person what it's for and what "a god" is.

Knowing all you know now (except for what is mentioned above) you read the entire book and see all the things that happened that are supposedly scientifically impossible, so you ask this person for scientific evidence for these claims. He tells you there is no scientific evidence and you are just supposed to pray and listen to your heart. Not only that, he tells you that believing in it without any scientific evidence is a good thing. It's actually a virtue.

What would you do? What would honestly be your reaction to this if this actually happened?

One : Don't miss the boat.
Two : Remember that we are all in the same boat.
Three : Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.
Four : Stay fit When you're 600 years old, someone may ask you to do something really b ig.
Five : Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.
Six : Build your future on high ground.
Seven : For safety's sake, travel in pairs.
Eight : Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.
Nine : When you're stressed, float a while.
Ten : Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
Eleven : No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a rainbow waiting

God told us that the only way to get to Him, is to go through Jesus Christ. And it was prophecied of Jesus that whoever believed in him will have eternal life. Now the first century church demonstrated the pains and trials that they went through to demonstrate their belief in Jesus. So the question is, what do you think you have to do, Christians, to demonstrate your faith in God and in Jesus? It seems that if the first century church had to go through all that it went through to attain to eternal life, that all subsequent Christians should have to do the same. Doesn't that make sense? Why do many modern doctrines not teach about what has to be done by the individual, things that Christ taught, such as selling everything, giving to the poor, and even becoming a eunuch.

As a note before the question, I must say that in the question, I am referring to a particular event on sciforums (and before you ask, it involved (Q)), and I am not trying to imply stereotypes or do anything else offensive (I probably will on accident).

There are certain atheists out there who like to preach about atheism in places where they shouldn't, then, when someone gets mad, they say they couldn't have been preaching because they have nothing to preach. I think that is incorrect; atheists do have a belief, but the belief just happens to be that there is no god. There is, in fact, a difference between not believing and believing in nothing (in regards to religion). The claim of a certain preaching atheist ((Q)) was that atheism is defined by denial of any divine being, and not belief. But I would say that 'denial' means 'having confidence against,' which, because it has confidence at all, it constitutes belief; therefore, atheists have beliefs which this person was preaching.

According to Gallup, only 3-4% of Americans are atheists, but they seem to make up a much higher percentage of people on the Internet, and for good reason. It takes a modicum of intelligence to operate a PC, and really, really stupid people tend to not be online. This was even more pronounced back in the early days of the World Wide Web in the early 90s.

The oldsters of the Lawrence Welk Generation--the ones who are most rabidly Christian--almost never go online. Heck, they have just enough technical savvy to give Benny Hinn their credit-card numbers. And the fundie wackos like the Amish and Hassidic Jews tend to eschew modern technology. So, no wonder that the Internet has a lot of atheists on it.

If I do not want what you want, please try not to tell me that my want is wrong.

Or if I believe other than you, at least pause before you correct my view.

Or if my emotion is less than yours, or more, given the same circumstances, try not to ask me to feel more strongly or weakly.

Or yet if I act, or fail to act, in the manner of your design for action, let me be.

I do not, for the moment at least, ask you to understand me. That will come only when you are willing to give up changing me into a copy of you.

I may be your spouse, your parent, your offspring, your friend, or your colleague. If you will allow me any of my own wants, or emotions, or beliefs, or actions, then you open yourself, so that some day these ways of mine might not seem so wrong, and might finally appear to you as right -- for me. To put up with me is the first step to understanding me. Not that you embrace my ways as right for you, but that you are no longer irritated or disappointed with me for my seeming waywardness. And in understanding me you might come to prize my differences from you, and, far from seeking to change me, preserve and even nurture those differences.

Everybody knows that it is impossible to win the lottery without having a ticket. So why do people get so upset when they learn they can't get to heaven without Jesus. Heaven is a far greater prize than any earthly lottery and they best believe that Jesus is the ticket. So says the Caveman, peace and God bless.

I've heard so many people ask questions and comment about prayer and religion in schools but I have not heard anyone mention the untruths that our children are being taught in school such as Christopher Columbus discovered America. Eveyone knows that the only thing that he discovered was that America was ihabited by Indigenous People. If I remember right, kids are taught to believe that Columbus discoverd a brand new, deserted island that was free for the taking and he claimed it for the Queen. At least that was what I was told in school, until I came home with my homework and my mom told me the true story. I feel that the true story should be taught in school. Is it?
