my son is planning to be a preacher and he preached his first time sunday night..my wife and i have a disagreement because i feel a young preacher just getting started should make lots of notes and go to the church and kind of practice or go over what he plans to say and do and then he can kind of get the feel of what should stay and what should go...my wife thinks you find a couple verses and then just go up and god will do the rest....i dont think god is going to do ALL the work...

Most preachers write out at least the outline for their sermon including the points they plan on covering and the pertinent verses they want to reference. Some preachers write out the whole sermon. I know several Pastors who preach and none of them just get up in front of the congregation and "wing it".

One preacher who has been preaching for over 40 years talked in one sermon about how the Bible says that believers are Priests and Kings before God and that when you prepare a sermon it's like preparing a meal. He said if some beggar came to your house looking for something to eat you might just give him some leftovers out of your refrigerator but if you knew a King was coming over for dinner you would take your time to prepare the best meal that you could. He said that's what he does before he "feeds the congregation" on God's Word.

A new preacher should certainly practice their sermon. In the seminary classes where they get trained they are told to practice in front of a mirror before preaching in front of the class.

Congrats with your son! yes a preacher should practice there sermons, but remember that GOD is a mysterious god, and he controls things. Your son can write a sermon and practice the sermon a thusand times, deos'nt mean that wehn sunday comes, it's going to be exactly the way he planned it. And no, GOD deso'nt do everything but God deso most of it, even before your son preaches on sunday, god is already working through him. Hope this helps

God bless!

I Must agree with You Sir.....Your Son Needs to Prepare His Sermon The same way Your wife Prepares A Meal.........
God Says: To Study to show thyself approved unto God. A Workman that needeth not to be ashamed "Rightly" Dividing the Word Of Truth. II Timothy 2:I5
My Son Also was called of God to Preach at 20 Yrs. old. He studied His Message Very Hard, Along with a Lot Of Prayer. He Did Make Notes and ask for God's Anointing. He was ready, and Many times God did take Him down another Road Or Scripture. But that was God...... When the Power Of God Came over Him, He surely was anointed and Everyone got Blessed! He Still Had to be " Prepared" tho, for God to Use Him. Our Preacher Used to Say "If You Take one step, God will Take Two." We Must Be Prepared So we Can Be Filled With The Spirit..... (smile) God Bless Your Son!

Simply put - We are to do our best, and then let God do the rest. I have preached many sermons, and they take a lot of prayerful preparation.

If your son is not getting before the Lord with His Bible open and earnestly seeking God for what God would have him say as opposed to just picking some verses and preaching on them without preparation in prayer he is in serious error. He should also be preparing an outline of what he is going to say and be willing to let God change the sermon if He so chooses.

I have done ministry where I have one message ready, and then the Lord directed me to preach on something else, but that is the exception and not the rule.

When the preacher doesn't spend time in God's presence listening for Him to speak he is not going to bring anything of value to those who come to hear him. It is tantamount to a General going to war haphazardly without any plan of attack and defense if forced to withdraw and still expecting to win. It is like a soldier going out to fight without the orders of the commanding officer. It is preaching in the flesh when God would have us preach in the power of the Holy Spirit.

I have a quote that fits this very well. "By failing to prepare - you are preparing to fail." - Your son must know this for his sake and the sake of those who will be hearing him.

well in a way you are both right... it truly depends also on what he is speaking on. if he is doing a sermon series it is very important to have his notes and be practiced. but giving a sermon is not like giving a speech. some of my favorite preachers give sermons on what God is teaching them in their lives and those don't need many notes as long as you have a basic structure for what you are going to speak on. I find that notes are important when there is a scripture or a point you want to make sure you don’t forget about.

I used to write 7 page sermons, with the full text in front of me. Now though I don't really plan anything or write any notes, before talking I just whisper, "God, let your Holy Spirit speak through me" and then I black out for 20-50 minutes (however long the service is) and the Spirit guides everything I say. Its actually quite cool, I have listened to audio tapes of my sermons and I end up saying stuff that amazed me because they were things I barely even knew myself.

I do agree with your wife and you. My husband is a preacher, and I believe you do need to practise what you believe is on your heart to share. But when it actually comes time to share, God may put a completely different subject on your heart. This does happen often. I think he should spend a lot more time with God and learning how to be more sensitive to what he is saying along with practising his sermon.

Without some kind of plan the sermon may wander with stray thoughts.
If your giving a sermon you would want to make sure your facts and quotes a right.
Practise makes perfect.

If the preachers would just READ the bible we would be better off. I wish they would stop give meaning in their own befiefs and start preaching what the bible says.
