According to Gallup, only 3-4% of Americans are atheists, but they seem to make up a much higher percentage of people on the Internet, and for good reason. It takes a modicum of intelligence to operate a PC, and really, really stupid people tend to not be online. This was even more pronounced back in the early days of the World Wide Web in the early 90s.
The oldsters of the Lawrence Welk Generation--the ones who are most rabidly Christian--almost never go online. Heck, they have just enough technical savvy to give Benny Hinn their credit-card numbers. And the fundie wackos like the Amish and Hassidic Jews tend to eschew modern technology. So, no wonder that the Internet has a lot of atheists on it.

It's funny how some of you True Believers are posting how atheists are losers who have to go online to get a life--and you're online yourselves.
BTW, photografr, I did use the correct grammatical form, so your post is pointless.

It's because the polls are wrong. There are far more atheists than have been counted. Many are closet atheists because it would be detrimental to their standing in their communities and families to admit it. But online, everyone can admit it because they are anonymous.

And now you do a similar ingredient. i'm an Atheist and that i attempt very tricky to have intense discussions with Christians in this website. It does not continually bypass properly provided that no longer all are arranged to evaluate an Atheist would fairly have a ingredient. the reason Atheists do no longer particularly clarify why they do no longer believe is that we've not considered a reason TO believe. while somebody tells you to believe some thing you come across is senseless, do you ask "Why?" or "Why no longer?" Atheists bypass with the former.

Although I can only testify from the atheist point of view. In American society it appears to be safer to come out of the closet as gay rather than atheist.
Sometimes, some gay people can still believe in god.
Just a guess. This sounds like a good idea for a TA question.

I think it's due more to the fact that most of them have highly antisocial or even sociopathic personality traits and hence experience great difficulty in effectively managing interpersonal relationships. They tend to be social isolates. So the internet is a way of establishing at least some semblance of human contact. It also provides a safe outlet for their anger, bitterness and frustration. They can lash out at people, insult and revile them, heap them with scorn and abuse, and all without fear of consequences. It's all anonymous. So the internet is perfect for an atheist.

I know a Christian family that's really religious and they don't let their kids get on the computer.
The only person that gets on the computer is the father or mother to do some extra work.
Seems ridiculous to me, they may never know if one of their kids has great potential to have a great job that deals with computers.

Well, I disagree about the Amish being wackos. They seem quite nice, and bake a mean cherry pie.

there are some credible studies that show intelligence as we currently measure it, is inversely related to propensity to believe in traditional religious doctrine.
What is probably key, is "as we currently measure it". As you are no doubt aware, we keep learning new things all the time, so while I am perplexed at the numbers of people that claim to "know" that god exists, I'm equally puzzled by the folks that "know" that no such thing could possibly exist.
Wouldn't the logical thing be to say that we don't have any good reason to believe, at least not yet?

Maybe Theists just have a life. I mean read some of the stuff on here about people mocking religion, making noodles into a deity and such. I would rather be technologically and scientifically in the stone age then to be hip and irreverent.

Kind of a mean question but I don't disagree with you.
In response to CJ: What do you mean atheist don't have children? I have two. And we have very meaningful realitionships. They are based on love, desire and understanding. When we have issues, we figure them out, we don't pray for answers that may never come.

Ever noticed that Americans are overrepresented on the Internet?
Only 5 per cent of people in the world are Americans......
I don't think being on the net necessarily indicates intelligence or wisdom. There are other factors at play such as age, access to resources, culture, etc.

I agree with you. Atheists are typically people with higher IQ's than average, the same kind of people that use computers!
