I've heard so many people ask questions and comment about prayer and religion in schools but I have not heard anyone mention the untruths that our children are being taught in school such as Christopher Columbus discovered America. Eveyone knows that the only thing that he discovered was that America was ihabited by Indigenous People. If I remember right, kids are taught to believe that Columbus discoverd a brand new, deserted island that was free for the taking and he claimed it for the Queen. At least that was what I was told in school, until I came home with my homework and my mom told me the true story. I feel that the true story should be taught in school. Is it?

How ironic that the people who most actively establish laws that enforce Property Protection in the World today, go to such lengths establishing them in lands that they stole.

Ironic and disgusting!

If Christopher Columbus "discovered America" just because he went there...then I "discovered England" when I went there a couple of years ago on holiday.

Move out Brits! It's mine!

it is ironic but true that historical facts are more often than not distorted and written to please the winning side which would mean the side that can dictate terms to the writer. this is true of all wars in world history wherein the victor or the so called civilized side have been painted as angels and the vanquished or the other side which didn't have the means to get their points of view across have always been shown as barbarians or worse. both sides have committed crimes against humanity in equal manner but the loser is tried and the victor is given a hero's welcome. hence if the indigenous people are not credited with saving Columbus and his crew from starvation and certain death in the strange land, that is just the ways of the world, we credit him for discovering America when he should have been demoted for poor navigation!!! these are the ways of the world and we have to learn to accept the half truths as acts of glory???????????

There is some eviddence that Columbus knew America existed, but thought he had a better chance of getting backing if he said he was looking for a short cut to Asia. He had seen Viking maps and it is likely that Vikings had been in America less than one hundred years before Columbus.

Yeah most of what is in official American history books is not true; distorted truth at best.

I speak English, French and Spanish. I have spoken 3 languages all my life. I believe every citizen of the United States of America should speak English, at least well enough to get by. It just makes life easier when you can communicate with the people you live and work around. I cam from a trilingual household, I believe people should hold on to their mother tongue but also learn to speak the language that is spoken by the majority of people in the country where they live.

Columbus thought that he had landed in the East Indies. He had NO IDEA where he really was. Besides, Leif Erickson discovered Greenland over 400 years earlier.

Christopher Columbis, on his death bed, STILL thought that he had arrived in the East Indies. He didn't discover anything. He refused to believe the place he went was a new continent, even after everyone else started discussing 'the New World'.

He deserves some credit for a 'historical accident'. That's all. An accident that completely changed world history, but an accident just the same. Calling it 'discovery' is just a lame way to try and justify a belief in European superiority.

"If it wasn't found out by Europeans, it didn't exist."
[like: "If a tree falls in the woods, and no one is there when it happens, does it make a sound?" (answer: yes)]
Arrogance at its worst.

Heck No..... Christopher Columbus did not discover anything. The Native Americans were there before him, but they could not stand up against the weaponry the Europeans had. It should not be taught that he discovered anything, I think.
