Why does the western world celebrate New Year's in the middle of winter when everything is dying? Then in April they make fun of the 'fools' who celebrate New Year's then, but really it makes more sense to celebrate a new year when new life starts, in spring. Is there a particular reason the western world celebrates in January? or was it due to the whim of some high ranking person?

What sticks out the most as far as personal family traditions go? One thing my family did for over 20 years was pass the SAME fruitcake around to a different family member each year. It would always be wrapped new, or cleverly packaged so the recipient didnt know what it was until they opened it. We really did keep the same one all those years until it finally got dropped and broke.

What about your traditions?
