Why does the western world celebrate New Year's in the middle of winter when everything is dying? Then in April they make fun of the 'fools' who celebrate New Year's then, but really it makes more sense to celebrate a new year when new life starts, in spring. Is there a particular reason the western world celebrates in January? or was it due to the whim of some high ranking person?

It's because January is the first month of the year. The start of a brand new year.

who are you?? mysterious person who speaks some truth. we are all slaves to time. I think april 1st would be a good new years day, but our choice or rather, their choice was to start from the point of where we are around the sun on January 1st. Anyway, 2 celebrations within 7 days and 1 second. thats a bit too strong to resist. =)
