I was invited to spend the Christmas with my friend's family. I'd like to buy a gift for the family but have no idea of what should I bring in this situation (don't laugh as I never celebrate Xmas before). Any ideas would be well appreciate.... This is a quite extended family.

When / how did the Christmas holiday become commercial ? Many ( not all ) people seem to be concerned how many or how fancy of a gift to receive / give.
