We talk about this often in religion class. To sum it up into a line, they are worried about what happens after death. An atheist won't believe in heaven, hell, or reincarnation, but because so many others do, they are influenced and question their own beliefs. That makes them worried and want to make sure they are really following the right path. Of course, most Atheists are Atheists because they have not the proof they want to decide whether to chose faith or not. So they question people who study a religion to find out what they can. Having faith in something is a built in human trait that we get from birth, so someone will always worship something, and always be questioning things. All religion is trying to do is find Truth, and that is what the atheists want to.

Some people question that which they do not understand because they are trying to grasp a concept. Some are simply facinated by people who think differently. Some question beliefs opposite of their own because it makes them feel superior and I suspect, some are genuinely curious. Where athiests and religious are concerned, it could be any or all of these reasons. Many people though, just find a good debate stimulating, fun, and informative. On this site, it seems that both the believers and non-believers can be a bit on the sensitive side. Sharing or a good exchange of ideas is a good step toward understanding and acceptance. I like to be questioned about my views. It gives me the opportunity to broaden my horizons and see what people think.

I'm not atheist, nor religious, so I guess from my middle ground stand point I can say that I have seen atheists mock and ridicule people with strong religious beliefs.

I think some are unsure and are still looking for answers. Some are closed-minded and ridicule those who don't share their beliefs. Others have a genuine interest in a fair and intellectual debate.

No one knows my beliefs. Not my true beliefs. Very often, the questions they ask are the ones I might ask myself. Yet, still the faith within me cannot be denied. For some reason or other, I am drawn to the fountain of worship time and again. I do not resent them nor their questions, but welcome them.

why shouldn't they?
Questioning is not bad. People should question everything. But the most important thing is accepting what makes more sense.

I have no problem with people questioning other peoples beliefs, (or lack of). It is the attacks I have a problem with.

Curiosity.
I am Christian and I like to find out what makes other religions different from mine, and atheist is a form of religion in itself in the fact that they believe that there is no GOD
