I was recently watching Oliver (1968) and it had scenes talking about money in it. It was very confusing, so can someone explain the old English money system. Guineas, crowns, schillings, farthings etc. I understand the system was decimalized in 1971. How did it work before ?

he had major family problems . The parents are in their 70's and the 'children' are 40 plus . His 40ish sister is a lesbian, he's known that for years, but his parents have been in denial. Suddenly, about a month ago, his sister announced that she and her live-in 'girlfriend' were having a baby . They had gone to a doctor for artificial insemination . Now, they're having a baby shower, and my friend and his wife will not go to the shower, because they do not want to support the decisions that led up to this . They will however, continue to love their sister and share holidays like Christmas together as a family . Ironically enough, his parents have taken a much stronger stance . His parents are now claiming that 'times have changed' and demand his attendance at the baby shower or else . His mother even hung-up on him, when he tried to explain their position . He asked me. . .." What should I do "?. . . . . .What would you tell him ???

Is rape a virtue in the Judeo/Christian faith? Genesis 19 details the escape of Lot and his two daughters from destruction.

The angels arrived and told Lot to leave the city for it has become wicked and deserves smiting.

So, Lot and his daughters were moral enough to escape the angels' wrath. I suppose Lot's wife was deemed moral enough, but she showed her true nature by looking back.

Yet, the moral daughters of Lot conspired to get their father drunk and rape him. Their desire for children was so great, they were willing to rape their own father.

A reader might be confused by this. The daughters were not chosen to be destroyed along with the rest of the city, but they performed an act that seems wicked to us. Does God condone and encourage this behavior? Is procreation so important that rape is an acceptable means to achieve it?

I ask this because, in the Adam and Eve story, Eve does not seem very surprised that she is being approached by a talking snake (or serpent, whatever wording you wish).

It seems there is a culture developing where it is acceptable for gay men to harass straight men in the work place. I’m sure that I am not the only one who continually gets disgusting sexual innuendoes from gay men in a primitive attempt to ‘convert’ us even after we have made it abundantly clear that we are straight. Well I for one am sick to death of tip toeing around their delicate sensibilities and any further persistent attempt on me will be met with that most affective of rebuttals; the good old slap across the chops.

In Argentina, it's rude, apparently, to pour wine from a bottle with your left hand. And pouring 'backhandedly' is said to indicate hostility. Is this true? If so, how does it work? Do you deliberately pour a bottle backwards to annoy someone? Is this true just in Argentina or elsewhere in Latin America too?

Exhausted every and any job lead, filled out applications everywhere. Applied for and was denied food stamps (even though I have had my money taken every week for over 15 years, by our wonderful government, which is just all too content on rebuilding foriegn countries, and selling our jobs overseas, and to the border jumpers while we starve right here in this great country, that my tax dollars are fighting useless wars to "protect".) I can't join the military, I have epilepsy, we have no homeless shelters anywhere near where I live. I believe in God, I pray endlessly for any kind of work, financial security, hope... I even considered selling my soul to Satan (even though it is not mine to sell) just to ensure that I don't have to sleep outside and eat from garbage cans. I am at my wits end. Impending homelessness is humbling to say the very least... and it truly makes me question our country and it's capitalistic nature, land of the free, God, and why it is we have to scrape to get by.

.....the thing goes....my parents have been trying to fix up my marriage and since sometime from few years back they have been trying to meet possible eligible suitors...quite a few years back it got nearly but broke just before the marriage could take place (I am thankfull to God for it though )....but however after that incident no positive development in the direction has taken so far even though a couple of eligible guys i came across (i felt would be the right kind of match) but somehow the desired results never materialised...then very recently my mum visited a lady who practises witchcraft n divinition (i respect the lady a real lot)...according to her it seems someone has hexed me n so all the matches fails n she has given me some magic potions to use to get rid of the curse....my question is is this hex a possible thing? if so will working on the magic words/using the potion help me? and what about the rule of 3? is this willful change of destiny?

I'm all for equality but I swear I think the race/ sex card is played way too often. You don't see a white Miss America contest every year. We don't offer scholarships for whites only or even have a recognized whites only organization in support of whites college fund. When will the debt be paid. I have actually been turned down for jobs because I was neither a minority or a female. I can't get a scholarship. Can't we all just get along.

I live in a rented townhouse and each unit is assigned two parking spaces behind the building. Parking in the front, on the street, is for anyone. My next door neighbor has ONE car and she usually parks out front. Whenever I park out front, even if there's still plenty of space for other cars, she'll park out back in MY spot. My spot isn't even behind her apartment. Both of her assigned spots are open! Is she doing this to be a B? Should I say something to her or just call my landlord? I'm not stealing anyone's spot when I park out front. The street is public property. But when I do want to park in my assigned spot, there's her car. What shall I do?

There are valid points for both issues. On one hand we don't want our individual rights lost, but sometimes if feels as if we are so focused on our own individual rights "what's in it for me" that we hurt others as a result.

How should we define where our own rights fit in with what is needed for the common good.

(just to give an example, so don't focus on whether this issue is right or wrong, because it's just to give an example of someplace you would choose a dividing line: I believe a child should have the right to pray in school).

I know that my rights end where your rights are infringed, but what does that mean.

I am agnostic I used to be an atheist, I have friends who are of VERY different religious backgrounds some are Pagan some atheist, Spirtiualists, and a few Christians... well, the only people who try to force me to believe in what they believe are the CHristians all the others are cool with my (lack of) beliefs
I just would really like to know why ya'll Christians try to push your beliefs onto us nonChristians... I'm just saying and besides telling someone their going to a hell they don't even believe in is kinda pointless... and like I've said I'm a pyro I can handle flames..
