I ask this because, in the Adam and Eve story, Eve does not seem very surprised that she is being approached by a talking snake (or serpent, whatever wording you wish).

I do not believe that animals spoke, reason for this is that the Bible didn't say so for one, and I assume that is one of the major reasons why Satan was able to trick her - by seeing the serpent speak and say that he ate of the tree that is why he got smarter and could talk was one of the lies he implied to make it sound good and that God was trying to keep her away from something good that would enlighten her more.

No, only our first parents were created with the gift of speech.Serpents have never been able to speak, not then nor do they now. Eve was the first human led to believe that disobeying God was the better course. Once, while not in the company of her husband, she heard a voice. It was not that of her husband nor that of God, but the voice of a serpent. Eve did not run away in fright, as God had earlier given her and her husband dominion over the animal creation, including serpents. (Gen. 1:28) So she listened. The serpent asked: “Is it really so that God said you must not eat from every tree of the garden?” Eve replied correctly, for she was fully informed about the forbidden fruit and the death penalty associated with it. But the serpent contradicted God, implying that Eve was being kept in ignorance and that God would not enforce his law by putting the transgressor to death. This was the first lie ever spoken.
Satan used the snake, by talking through it, just as a ventriloquist
does. Eve was totally fooled by this.
1 Tim 2:14--"Adam was not deceived, but the woman was thoroughly deceived and came to be in transgression.”

No. That's because the hebrew word that most bibles translate into serpent actually means a 'shining one'. This is the same description used to describe the angel known as the devil in other scriptues. Satan is also described as the angel who was assigned a high position and rank here on the Earth for certain duties in relation to mankind. So, was it a serpent? Was it satan? Was it satan disguised as a snake?

That's b/c it was the devil talking to her, none of the others talked. He was telling her to do something that she wanted to do in a way that she couldn't comprehend that it was weird to be speaking to a serpent. He was very sneaky and convincing, just as he is today, only now he doesn't appear in the form of a serpent, but as objects and thoughts of desire for wrong.

there was only a snake that talks there. she wasnt affraid of him because she lived in the jungle and was tired of talking to adam. so a snake that talked was a great change for her only problem was the snake tricked her into eating and makeing adam eat the apple.
the only problem i have with that story is its a little sexist. cause the moral of it is dont trust woman they are the devil.
if that aint sexist i dont know what is. kinda reiterates the fact that jesus and his disciples were men cause no woman would ever translate that that way

Of course...every creature speaks in its own particular way in that story. There is a problem though. I don't think there ever was a garden of Eden, unless you refer to a former British prime minister. But that isn't the garden of the story!

12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

The Serpent was satan.

Before Jesus was made flesh he was Aslan and resided in the Garden of Eden.

A talking snake. It never ceases to amaze me what people can believe.

We can only speculate how the communication was transacted.
Eve had many more senses to deal with, perhaps.
