Christmas was designed to replace the winter solstice. Similarly, Easter began as a celebration of the vernal equinox.

At least the solstice means something, for everyone on earth, sun is at its greatest distance from the equatorial plane resulting in the shortest, (or longest if south of the equator) day of the year.

This year the Solstice occurs on the 22nd of December. But I'll still celebrate the season during my days off from work, the 25th and 26th.

Do you think that a lot of chruches are in happy,happy, joy. joy mode? I used to think, what is this person problem why arent they joyful they act like they are at a funeral in church? They should ba thankul, then in 2003-2004 through a series of hard lesson and advesrsity I got "knocked off my high horse and knock on my backside" its hard to be joyful when you are in pain, suffering, and if you never get a break in life, my question, how do I minister to those that have it hard in life and dont have joy and how do I be compassionate towards these people? How do I NOT push this on people and be a light? This has been on my heart thank you for your answers and God bless you.

Christians joined with the world largest corporation, and that is the beginning of your all loving, godly ways?

Christians joined the govenment because it made them exempt from taxes and the govenment joined with christianity because they knew that if people didnt question their religon they would question their government. I know that you guys dont believe in logic but it a court of law that would be considered MOTIVE and purpose for christianity. Do you just ignore that fact that your ancestors where so about money that they murdered and raped millions in the name of god, and these are the people who wrote a book that you base your entire lives on?

If the only selection process most of us use in selecting a belief, is by being born into it (the religion of our parents), and most of us never change religions after that happens, then it seems to me religion happens to us by "default". Religion by default almost sounds like brain washing, or a form of it anyways, with very little free will involved. Most of us don't choose our religion, just like I don't choose to be white, or you choose to be black. The POINT I am trying to get us to discuss, why is religion so exclusive? Why is the path to Nirvana, or Heavan, or enlightment, usually only available through the religion you happen to be born into. Isn't that the same as saying 90% of all Buddhists, which happen to be Asian, are going to Hell (Christian belief?)... Doesn't that mean God is preferential? Is God a racist? (See my earlier question "I am being told if you do not believe in my religion, then you will go to hell. Why? " if you are interested)

"Belief is based on faith, it has nothing to do with reason". Somehow I understand that statement.

The problem I have with it is this: We have a lot more 'reason' now than a couple of thousand years ago. Back then they knew less than we know now. The earth was still flat in those days and only a few thousand years old. We have a lot more answers now to many questions. Not all, but we are on our way.

Did the people 2000 years ago also say "I believe out of faith, not out of reason"? Or is it safe to say that in those days the Bible provided them with "reason and answers"?

No offense to believers intended, but I do think it's harder these days to fight against reason than 2000 years ago. I know most believers embrace science and reason, but my real question is about how you deal with this.

Do you think you have to do a harder job at 'keeping the faith' than a person had 2000 years ago, simply because your own mind has to beat a lot more reason nowadays?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a believer, and I get just as irritated with bible thumpers knocking on my door trying to convert me partly because they care but mostly because God said they had to. However, I really DON'T see why other non believers are so worked up about Christmas. Wha'ts all this "I'm offended by Nativity scenes" stuff? I know so many people who get really upset when people wish them "Merry Christmas." Why are we not supposed to call them "Christmas trees" anymore?
I don't get offended when people wish me Merry Christmas instead of Happy Hollidays. I kind of like it that a Christian can wish me good will and good cheer. I don't feel like a Nativity scene is "shoving religion down my throat" any more than I think that people who wear pagan symbols are trying to shove their religion on everyone else. I don't agree with every one of the 10 commandments, but I'm not exactly pro murder/lying/stealing either. Why are people so offended?

This shows homosexuality is wrong- so why do people keep saying its OK?

Pain and every emotion is simply electrical signal created in a brain made of flesh. How can you just make up a magical world where air rises out of a dead body and has the ability to be burned and tortured? Any reputable geologist will tell you that the earth is beyond 6,000 or 10,000 years. The earth is actually about 4.5 billion years old. Do you honestly think that these THOUSANDS of men and women who study geology for 4 to 10 years of their life (bachelors, masters, doctorate) are all wrong, lying, and a part of some conspiracy against you? Or worse yet, do you believe they are too stupid to notice their own flaws? What does a geologist have to gain over lying? It seems a lot better NOT to lie because you'd win a Nobel Prize with its money reward. It just baffles me to think that you believe an entire field of science is wrong. Finally, what are YOUR qualifications to be able to make this claim? high school degree? college degree (in what field)?

Those poeple on that show always have huge parties when they turn 16. Well todays my 16th birthday, and I hardly did anything. Im having a family party at my house tomorrow (nothing big at alll), and then going cosmic bowling with some of my friends afterwards. ANd frankly, thats all i want. Does anyone else find it pointless to have a huge party like thos spoiled brats on Mtv's Sweet 16?
