Society & Culture - 19 July 2006

The amount of cruelty in the world depresses me. If I believed in god(s), I might believe there will come a time when the world will be free of pain and suffering. I might even believe that murderers and animal abusers and wife beaters would be punished. But since I don't delude myself with such fanciful notions, I don't believe that such a world will ever exist. This makes me so depressed I just want to cease to exist. Certainly, I try to do what I can to relieve the suffering of others, but in the grand scheme of things, I think it's hopeless.

How do other atheists deal with this subject? How do you go on living? I would be especially interested to hear the viewpoint of an atheistic existentialist.

(I already have a psychiatrist and anti-depressants, so don't go there. And Bible thumpers, spare me the preaching.)

It seems like education rather than freeing people's minds to think has instead given them a restrictive system in which to think. Does anybody see this?

In France girls are banned from wearing hijab in school because they beleive in liberty, equality, brotherhood , and religious symbals are said to divide..


But why not ban ALL clothes as well because clothes divide people.
Only as naked we are truely equal !!

Does racism on the Internet have a different impact or "feel" than racism encountered in society or the "real world"? Some have said that societal racism is covert now, no one says it to your face, but the Internet allows more overt forms due to anonymity. Is this true? Does it affect you more, bother you more, or is it better because at least you know what you are dealing with?

i find Buddhism intriguing. i don't consider Buddha a god, but i do think he was a prophet...i love his philosophy. i think all religions have something to offer and want to blend them all to become my own...but if i do this can i remain a Catholic?

Is an Atheist someone who believes differently then you or is it someone who does not believe in any of the religions and the idea of God?Would you call an Atheist names and would you call a person who believes differently then you names?

I am confused, occaisonally I hear on the news something about Israeli Arabs, arn't they Palestinians? who are the Israeli Arabs? what do they believe? who do they support? are they citizens of the Jewish state? do they serve in the Israeli Army or Government? Mexicans are the Hispanic largest group in the U.S. due to Mexico
proximity with the U.S. and their country's population exceed 100 million people. just Mexico city has more people than the three U.S. largest cities combined (NYC,LA and Chicago) not to mention the whole country of Mexico. it is a vast country and the largest one in population in Latin America.if the American people don't keep pushing Congress to stop illegal aliens mostly from Mexico, America will definitely belong to the mexicans.
