I think education can usually be beneficial to promoting free thought and the exchange of new ideas. However, I find some so-called intellectuals to be book-smart, but not able to think 'outside the box'. Overall, I'd say education is preferred to the alternative.
Too many people seem to just follow each other's thoughts around like cattle. I've heard the term 'sheeple' used to describe people like that. They just do what they're told, and believe whatever they hear. Sad, but I think it's way too common.

Okay? Perhaps after all these years someone can give me a definition and practical application of "freeing" ones mind. The only people who spout that crap around me are pseudo intellectuals who insist on repeating ideas and thoughts that are clearly someone elses.

To some extent. Children often aren't taught to think for themselves or how to apply logic or reasoning to a problem. It has created a generation of lazy thinkers...but I hasten to add that wherever there is intelligence...there will exist the ability to think...and sometimes, it will happen on its own...in spite of these areas of concern. I was forced to think for myself at an early age...and what at first appeared as a hardship for me; became my one of my greatest blessings.

I think good education encourages people to think - it gives the students something to think about, it stimulates their minds, and provides a framework for them to share their thoughts.

Totally, media bias has provided one sided thinking. But people have no one to blame but themselves. The truth is out there, we are just to lazy to find it.
