Why do I always see them flying in formation to the west, east or north (in the Fall)?
My theory is that maybe they are going to a rendezvous point or feeding ground to meet other groups before heading south.

Some flies swoop and circle like the birds and bees but the black flies around my home and barn fly in abrupt 90degree turns. Is there an anatomical reason for this?

We've never seen them splashing in the lake water but they use the birdbath all the time. The lake water is a public water supply and is very clean.

Is it true that river snakes can't bite you if you are in the water? A friend told me that will only bite if - for example - they got into your boat.

They could easily wipe out the dog with one swipe of their claws, yet a puny little dog will make them run like they are in great danger.

It was pink, about a quarter of an inch long (maybe a little less), and kind of resembled a small cricket. I'd never seen one before, and it was in my bathroom sink. I wasn't sure if I should just wash it down the drain, or leave it be. Might it have been a juvenile cricket?
