We have many spiders in our old house, but this one is by far the most beautiful. Can anyone tell me what kind of spider she is?

Thanks in advance! She's actually been very patient with our photographing her (with and without flash!) over the past couple months.

That looks like Araneus Diadematus - the "cross spider". Otherwise known as the common European garden spider.

"skeptik" is correct..

That is known as a European Garden Spider. A common Orb Web Weaver. They are not dangerous to humans and will rarely bite unless seriously threatened. Even it bitten, it is only mildly painful and, like I said, is harmless to humans. Even though it is called a "European" Garden Spider, it is also very common in the U.S. from New England to the South Eastern states, and can also be found in the Northwestern States as well as Southern Canada, although it is more common in Europe and the Eastern U.S.. They make quite an impressive web.

An interesting note about Garden Spiders. They have been known to create noises, by rubbing body parts together, similar to Grasshoppers and Crickets, when threatened. This is an act called stridulation and is common in many types of insects, but is rare among arachnids.
