The following problem is a standard problem found in many physics text books. A block of mass M is at rest on a horizontal frictionless table. It is attached to a rigid support by a spring of constant k. A clay pellet having mass m and velocity v strikes the block from the opposite side that the spring is attached to.

(a) Determine the velocity of the block immediately after the collision.
(b) Determine the amplitude of the resulting simple harmonic motion. In order to solve this problem you must make a number of simplifying assumption; some are stated in the problem and some are not. First, solve the problem as stated.
(c) Discuss the approximations you had to make in order to solve the problem. (There are at least five.)

Explain your work. Thanks! :)

What is the solubility of MX2
in 0.11 M M(NO3)2?

MX2 --> M + 2X (ksp=4.79e-13)

i...enough....11.........0
d..-x..............+x..........+2X
f...some........(.11+x)....2X

I am solving

Ksp=[M]*[X]^2
4.79e-13=(.11+X)(2x)^2
I keep getting the answer 1e-6

I don't know what I am doing wrong. Please explain if you can help. Any help is appreciated :)

The human heart provides about 1 to 10 watts of power to circulate blood through the body. A 9.6 volt, 2.6 amp-hour rechargeable battery is used for some cordless electric drills. For 100 percent efficient conversion of electrical energy into blood pumping work, estimate how long one of these rechargeable batteries qould last when 5 watts of power is consumed. Recall that 1 J/sec = 1 W = 1 A * 1 V

Please help.

1. Find the energy required to ionize a ground state hydrogen atom. That is, what is the energy required to make the transition from n = 1 to n = inifinite.

I'm assuming use E = -R_h * Z^2 ( 1/n^2 final - 1/n^2 initial )
where n final is 0 (because infinite makes it equal to 0) and n initial is 1 and z = 1???

2. Calculate the frequency of light emitted when the electron in an He^+ ion relaxes from the third energy level to the first energy level.

I don't get this, Am i suppose to use the equation above but i need to change n final to 1 and n initial to 2 while changing z to 2 since 2 is He^+ atomic number and solve?

3. If an electron in a hydrogen atom relaxes to the second energy level, emitting a photon of wavelength 410.2 nm, what higher energy level did it start at?

I use e = hv, c = lambda * v (V = wavelength)

find the energy and plug into Rydberg's equation and solve right?

Thx =)

I just cannot figure out what I am doing...How do you balance them. I do understand the canceling out of spectators, but when I write out the equation, I get confused on what is written first and which ones stay together and break apart. For example...
CaCl2 (aq) + K3PO4 ----> what goes here??? And once you figure it out and write it all out to see the spectators which ones stay together and which ones part???
