Because the ab and the -ab cancel each other out.
a^2+ab-ab-b^2
This results in a binomial (specifically, the difference of two squares).
a^2-b^2

you are only multiplying 2 polynomials so the answer is a binomial. if you add another one, then the answer would be a trinomial, and so on

this si called a "difference of 2 squares"
that means that when you foil it out becuase the signs are different teh middle terms cancel each other out and you are left with a binomial.
- i don't let my algebra kids pass if they cant recognize this!

um.. becuase... (a+b) (a-b) is a^2-b^2. because ab-ab is zero...
