Newborn & Baby - December 2006

My husband and I bought our son four gifts. A chair (my husband picked this out..it's like a little fold out chair with a cup holder for babies. He has one just like it.) A LeapFrog Baby piano, a Winnie the Pooh electronic book and a bunch of different little things like the fresh food feeders, a set of plates, bowls, cups and spoons, new pacifiers, etc.. Anyway, I'm asking because my husbands cousin and his wife just had a baby, too. He's about a month younger than ours. We asked him what they were getting their baby for Christmas and they said nothing. That it was a waste of money and that I was just trying to spend money any way I could!

My husband and I have been arguing about this. He says that he wants to start feeding our son (2.5 mos. approx. 13lbs.) rice and cereal because he eats a lot. I keep telling him no, that we need to wait until his doctor says is it okay. I know a lot of moms who DID give their babies rice at his age but didn't tell their babys doctor.. what did you guys do?

Is 7pm too early? Can you give me examples of what works with your baby? Or what you did to ensure a long sound sleep at night.
Thanks

Talked to my daughter-in-law today. She put the baby to bed on his stomach last night and he slept much better. He doesn't like his back or side at all. All 7 of my kids slept on their stomachs. The theory back then was if they vomited they would be less likely to choke on it.

I'm really nervous about being a new mom at the age of 19 and I'm not sure I will always know what to do and how to tell if she has an ear infection or a cold or anything. what are some symptoms of common baby illnesses, and how can i help prevent them? i know she will get sick, but is there anything i can do to lessen the risk of something serious or chronic?

also, i wanted to put a plant in the baby room because my fiance and i like plants. is bamboo baby safe? or maybe even a flowering plant, like a gerber daisy?

My son is 2.5 mos. and he has very strong legs. If you pull him up into the standing position, he will stand there for as long as you'll let him. (Holding his hands of course) My mom and sister had a fit the other day when I did this, though, claiming I was going to make him bowlegged. I've never heard of that. Anyone else? TIA

I often wonder if I am giving my baby enough vitamins in his meals. Last week I saw in the chemist vitamin drops designed for babies, and I just wondered if anybody here would recommend them. I give him a lot of fruit and veg, but I only eat chicken so that's all I give him meat wise. He is nearly 10 months old now.

I came across many items described as a 'doudou' when looking for baby gifts. What exactly is it?

My son has had a lump on his head since he was born (he's three months), I've asked the doctor about it, and he has said that it is just a fat pocket and I shouldn't worry about it. I have a friend that has been an OB nurse for years and she has never heard of such a thing. Has anyone else heard/ dealt with this? Is it something I should be worried about??

Can I get some tips on breastfeeding? My 1 month old son will not latch on for anything! I've tried pretty much everything anyone has told me. I talked to a nurse and she told me to keep trying and that eventually he will get it, and he is not. Is it too late to give up hope? I know I am not but I feel like a horrible mother that he is not getting the nutrients he needs from the breastmilk. I have been giving him formula.
