when the senate held a recent all-night session with regards to the Iraq war, it was reported circa nightly news that the president planned to veto the decision to begin pulling troops out of Iraq by April 2008. Although the measure fell short of the votes needed to pass, the president's decision to veto it should it pass was made even prior to the cessation of the meeting of the senate, which would ultimately mean that the president had decided that no matter what the senate said he would still veto the measure and that the all-night session was essentally nothing more than a mere joke, as it would do nothing to change the presiden't mind. My question is how could the president alone simply decide he was going to veto the measure without even LISTENING to the senate? Can you say autocracy?

8 of the 18 Iraqi benchmarks have been made,
how come he didn't tell us which ones have been met?

Where can I find the list of the benchmarks Iraqi's
HAVE met and the ones they are still 'working' on?

Remember...
Just because Bush said it was so...
Does NOT make it the truth!

So, I'm a temp working in the government and am interested in applying for the position I am temping in. The problem is I'm scared because while going through a divorce with my husband he filed false charges against me, dropped them later on but they are still on my record. They are criminal charges (second degree assault). How will this play out when they run my background check? What are the chances of them still hiring me if I am open and honest on my application? OR should I just not apply for the position? PLEASE HELP! I am a good woman who was dealing with a spiteful husband and now I have these charges on my record that will follow me forever. Will the government hire me anyway? OR..??

Leno was making jokes about the "Sleep Over" at the Senate, and Mathews started to get upset. So Chris actually said this about Bush: "It is time we Journalists, quit being so Objective about reporting the news, and take the Gloves off".
I thought it was a Journalists job to BE objective when reporting the news?
This is not a comparison with Rush or anyone else.
But does that statement seem odd or scary to anyone else?

In my opinion, I believe Washington is far too corrupt to adequately serve the American people. To this end, what if we changed the requirements for elected officials to eliminate the financial and politcal motivations.

Here's a start:

- Create a process which allows anyone to run for office, not just those with money. For starters, eliminate all campaign contributions and fund the campaigns from the government campaign fund, controlled by candidate requirements.
- No income (including non-cash gifts) from outside sources while elected.
- Eliminate the political parties and make candidates stand on their own values.
- Upon being elected, the person must turn over all assets to the government (including cash, stocks, bonds, etc.). After their term, they would receive a pension, sized according to position.

I believe this would be a start to getting true civil servants in our government and eliminate the corruption.

Thoughts? More ideas?

The solution to the problem with people abusing too many IDs would be a requirement to pay a monthly subscription fee for posting limited number of messages. Only one ID per credit card would be allowed.
A pricing scheme similar to monthly cell phone plans could be introduced (the number of messages posted per month would be equivalent to minutes of talk time). If a person exceeds the monthly limit, additional messages would be charged at higher rate.

Would you be willing to pay for this service and how much?

Please provide answer in the following format: $ per month / number of posts allowed ( for example: $5 / 300 posts)

How much should additional posts (beyond limit) cost?

Why do thinking people ever vote Labour?

They are worse than useless they are criminally negligent.

"Violent crime in the three months to the end of June increased by 6% on the same period last year, according to quarterly Home Office figures."

12% rise in drugs possessions.
trafficking people for sexual exploitation (up 30%)
sexual grooming (up 36%),
1,035,046 violent incidents against the person, excluding sexual offences and robberies.
gun crime was up 6%

In 2004, Labour presided over a "12% jump in violent crime over the past year and a 1% rise in crime overall, according to their latest figures"
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/3914289.stm

Accounting for Labour's goal-post shifting, violent crime has risen 19+%?

Home Office claimed the 5% rise in violent crime was not statistically significant.

BBC quotes 7% but Guardian quotes 5%.
I wonder why.

Have you or your speech been curbed because you might be called a racist ?
The use of the word RACIST has been used as a very useful tactic to shut up the speech that they do not wan't to hear.
The typical WHITEY is so scared that he curls up in the corner and cries like a beaten down dog because he has let one word dominate his life.

P.S. I dont mean that people should spout off slurs just because, that is equally wrong.

I just came across a question asking if your freedom had been affected by the patriot act. The asker and many answerers seemed to be of the opinion that because they had not been affected, everything was alright.
I remembered this German poem, I looked it up and here it is:

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.
