A republic is a form of government where representatives act in the name of the people. It may be a democratic republic (like the US) there the officials are elected, or a delegatory republic where the officials are appointed (such as by a monarch)

An independent country is one with it own government, and the sovereign right to make its own laws.

One has nothing to do with the other. You can have a republic that's not sovereign, and you can have an independent country that's not a republic.
