People often talk about Iraq having similarities to Vietnam. Why did the Vietnam war happen?

No. His are much skankier, uglier, and are more puss filled. To our soldiers, the Iraqi soldiers, and the Iraqi police...keep up the good work.

Well Cons, there you go. Something to cheer about, right?
No doubt this will be the prominent event for a few days. Tony Blair has wasted no time in cheering what a great blow vs. Al Qaeda this is. A Jordanian, who was really a minor player in the insurgency, killed. Well, it's something.
Al-Maliki cleverly named his two most controversial cabinet picks when he announced this news (the U.S. waited and allowed him to break the story), timed for maximum propagandic effect. Well done, played about as well as it could be.

What's it mean? Not much, really. In a few weeks you won't even remember his name. We've killed the number three guy (so we were told) in OBL's organization a number of times. I forget what their names were.
The news media now has to build up another 'Hassan-Ben-Sober' to put a personal face on the 'enemy' for the dumbasses to follow.

We will now see the Bush administration through their various proxies saying how their 'stay the course' strategy is beginning to pay-off.
No troop withdrawl -- the build up for the Ramadi offensive continues.

I don't think we'll be able to patrol, let alone control Kelmand : better get some kind of Green Zone established and fortified asap, with sound contingency evacuation plans out of it when the time comes.

Remember Saigon, and the dreadful clamouring on the US Embassy roof to board the helicopters? Many "loyal" Vietnamese were left behind.
This time, there'll be mobs of Kurds and Shiites.

I work with a guy who claims he was a Ranger and served in Vietnam. His stories are inconsistent and he lies about a lot of other things, so I am trying determine if this is a Lie. He says he served from 1974-1980, drafted after high school so some time in June or July. The draft was ended in 1973. He says he spent a year in country. By the time he finished basic training, ranger school, jump school and what not it would be 1975. So my question is for anyone who might have been there or knows about American troop numbers and involvement in Vietnam after the Major troop withdrawals in 1973 and before the fall of Saigon in 1975

What branch? How are you treated in terms of housing and pay? I live on a base that is Air Force/Army. The Air Force side is sooo much nicer than the Army side! The bases are separated only by a gate, but if you take a ride through the Army's side, it looks so dumpy! Why is that? Do you like being a military spouse? I personally do, but I am an Air Force spouse after all. And how many times has your spouse been deployed? How do you cope with it? Especially with children? And, don't you get extremely angry about people who don't support what our troops are doing...even if it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to us?
