You had to register with selective service?

I presume that since you are not a permanent resident alien, You would not be subject to being drafted.

We have people from Russia in the army.

I don't think there is any way around the requirement to be a permanent resident alien.

The military DOES NOT care what country you from, as long you want to join them. There are many foreign born soldiers in the military, and they are also in high ranks in the military. I've known this Brazilian born Sargent who commanded an entire unit in Iraq etc. As long you are a permanent resident you can join them, if you are not a permanent resident just talk to a recruiter, I am sure they will make something work out for you, because now THEY NEED people, I meant THEY REALLY, REALLY NEED new recruits and coming from another country and speaking another language is even PLUS.

Yes, need to get perm res alien status, but that's not so hard in this case. I'd try to talk to a recruiter & get him to write a letter saying you want to join but need to get this squared away cause the Army wants you. Take a copy of that to immigration & include it in your package requesting status change.

On the topic though, how do yall feel about allowing non-res aliens to volunteer for service in exchange for perm res status & eventual citizenship on completing the contract. Language testing & such of course.

you have to be a permanent legal resident. Until you get that taken care of, you will not be able to enlist in any branch of the US military.
