How long are contracts for active service in these branches and how have people done once they got out?

The contracts depend. Have you seen any recruiters yet? I enlisted in the Navy for 5 years. It was for but I got a $6000 bonus to add another year. My husband enlisted in the Marine Corps for 5 years because that's what they gave him. When they get out, people tend to either go back to school or go back home and get a normal job. More often than not, they re-enlist. People will swear through out their entire enlistment that will get out. A week before they get out, they re-enlist.
If you want to prepare, get in shape. It's more mental than physical. If you make yourself believe you can do 100 push-ups in to minutes (I mean really convince yourself) you'll do. I joined the Navy because I was out of shape and didn't' thing I could go through the Marine Corps boot camp. It was a breeze! If I could change it, I would have gone Marine.

GO TALK TO A RECRUITER! Do your own research to so they can't BS you. If you know anyone who is in or used to be, take them.

You should go to the service of your choice and take the ASVAB test to see if you are qualified to enter the military. Once you take the ASVAB test it will tell you what career fields in the military you may enter. The ASVAB test is good for all the military services, therefore you will not have to retake it again to enter any branch of the military, Army, Navy, Marine Corp, Coast Guard, or Air Force. Make your appointments to talk to the other services at least 24 hours in advance so they can convert your score to their service requirements.

Basic training is difficult and hard only because you have not been through it as of yet and it is brandspanking new o you. You have also heard stories from relatives and friens about the bad *** drill sgt and cadre and what they will make you do. Ask yourself this question How many before me made it through basic training and came through in fine fashion. The ones that ae laughing and telling you these stories are doing what? "laughing" I'llbet that during certain phases of their training they were not laughing because at the time it was not funny.

What you are going to learn is how to defend yourself as well as assit in the protection of you buddies and how to stay alive. There will be lots of physical training and more physical training. You will learn to march, without looking down, weapons training, how to keep you room and clothing in a neat and orderly fashion, MAMA can't help you here. You will be required t make you own bed and clean your own room or area. You will be getting up before daylight which will become like 2nd nature to you after awhile because you will be going to be long after dark. In other words the days are long. The food has improved, but it won't be like mom make at home.

Normally these are four (4) year contracts with two (2) years of reserve time after completion of your four years of active duty.

As far as how people have done after they have finished their military service, that depends on you. Some have gotten out and become good politiicans. John Kerry was in the Navy, Murtha, the congressman from Pa was in the Marines. A few have gotten out and became good business men, even millionaires. Some have gotten out and become common drunks on the streets, so that will depend on you and what your goals are. We can not look into the future, but most people that enter the military come out, find successful careers and become productive citizen.

I hope this has been of some use to you, good luck.

Well I dont know about the Navy or Marine Corp. I am in the Army and have been in for five years. I would say make sure you join for the job you want to join for. The army has 212 different jobs that you could do so I am sure the navy and marines have alot too. Preparing for it you wouldnt really have to do, I went into army basic training without perparing at all. Most of it is just a mind game. There isnt anything here you cant do. Just remember 1000's of people have gone though it. Best of luck to you.

the minimum contract for either I believe is 2 years plus training time. I think the longest initial contract is six years. To prepare for either, you need to start running. every day. The marine corps is more physical than the navy, so you need to do pull-ups, as well. Talk to a recruiter for each, and decide which is best for you.

Contract vary and there has been a stop loss order on marines for some time, if you want to be a marine the thing to do that will make boot camp more tolerable is start running and doing calisthenics daily
