I've written a murder mystery with a homicide detective as the main character. At this point I have used some creative license. The note the murderer left gets examined by an ESTA machine, bringing about interesting results, close to the end of the book. I didn't want the results coming in too soon. I act like ESTA machines are not all that common - therefore it takes them a while to get access to one. However I don't really know if that is realistic or not.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the SOP of dealing with notes in a murder or kidnapping investigation? In particular how automatic the using of an ESTA machine would be?

Thanks!

Yesterday I went from Canada to the US (the US is my home) and I went through customs. The customs lady looked up my record, and claims I was arrested once. I've never been arrested in my life, and I have a clean record, and she claims I was lying, but never told me when and what I was arrested for...then when I had my bags checked the guy went and looked up my ID again...what is up with that???

marine corps boot camp. even after i told u all about the brutality and abuse of marine boot camp u all still defend it! i told u of blanket parties, drill instructors beating up recruits, which is illegal, and the time even when i was told not to look around, i did i was caught, and right when i was going to get my first bite of my meal, the drill instructor whispered in my ear, "you are done eating". with this being said, i asked u all a question, if u were a police officer in san diego, and you were looking thru the fence at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, and if you would see a drill instructor choking or kicking a recruit in the butt, i know you wouldnt have jurisdiction on a military base, but you can report it to the MP's, well anyway, i asked if you would see this behavior would you report it or would you just smile and turn away. i had about 20 answers and ALL of you said you would smile and turn away!!! i thought police officers were against illegal activities! are you?

I'm intrigued to know how far the police insistence on evidence extends. If, for example, I went to the police saying I had been drink-driving, but by the time I went to the station my blood alcohol level was normal, would they prosecute me?
Or if I went to them with something I'd nicked from a shop and confessed, would they do me for theft?
Is a confession alone enough, and if not why not? Answers from police or similar welcome!

The other day i was driving a road which i had never driven in the past. I seen the mobile unit ahead and there were no other vehicles near me. The road is not in a residential area but there are lamposts on the kerbside. There was no speed limit sign for at least 1 - 2 mile from the mobile unit. I understood the road to be a 40 mph and not the 30mph it turns out to be but there were no speed limit signs nearby. the unit also says that i was doing 51mph in this zone and i can safely say that there was no way i had achieved this speed over 100 - 150yds in my peugeot 307 1.4 90bhp from a stopped start. Can anyone suggest how i will defend this acusation? Wouldnt it make more sense for them to place a few more speed limit signs nearby to advise motorists what speed they should be doing? What course of action should i take?

I have received an email from a friend that tells me that if a robber takes me to an cash machine and asks me to withdraw money, if I enter my PIN in backwards, the machine will recognise it, give me the money and alert the police. I am a bit sceptical and suspect that it may be set up in the US (if at all!). It sounds a good idea - but has anyone heard of/and/or tried it?

Being even more of a sceptic, my husband wonders how long it would take for the police to respond!

Naturally, if it is true, then we should all know about it - but if it isn't, it could be very dangerous to try it!

It was a bit difficult trying to find a category for this one!
