For example, the US switched permanently to income taxes in 1913. But why? What was the motivation? I understand that the US gov't obtained revenue from tariffs before that. What was wrong with the tariff system? Did it have a negative effect on the economy? FOR EXTRA STARS: What about other governments? When did they switch, why, etc. I'd love a web stie that has a list of countries and their revenue/tax schemes.

July 22, 2007 -- One of the high-priced lawyers who have sucked $47 million out of the $1 billion World Trade Center insurance fund is infamous for defending companies that manufactured Agent Orange, a pregnancy drug linked to cancer, and defective breast implants.

James Tyrrell, a partner in the law firm Patton Boggs, is hailed in legal circles as the "master of disaster" and the "devil's advocate."

Mahamu Kanneh, a Liberian native who received asylum in this country and attended high school and community college here, according to The Washington Post, was denied a speedy trial after three years awaiting a court-appointed interpreter who could speak the tribal language of Vai.

A court-ordered psychiatrist determined that Kanneh, despite his functional facility with English — he originally spoke with detectives in English, The Post reports, needed to have Vai spoken in order to understand the proceedings against him.

Giraldo is suing the state prison system and several guards over the state's policy of assigning inmates like her to men's or women's prisons depending on whether they have had a sex change.

"Prisons are violent places, and male prisons are especially violent places," said Greg Walston, a lawyer who took Giraldo's for free and asked a jury this week for unspecified damages. "You take that boiling cauldron and you put one woman in there — which is exactly what happened here — and it's like throwing a fresh piece of meat into a lion's cage."

Giraldo, 30, claims Folsom State Prison guards ignored her complaints and returned her to the same cell until she was assaulted again, then placed in protective custody and moved to another facility.

How does everyone feel about living in a world of fear because of their government here in the USA. How do you feel about the statement that a Reagen Admin. Official made recently concerning the staging of another 9/11 type attack so that the president and his administration can stay in power and turn it into a dictatorship, and all this within the next year or abouts. Also for another scary idea check out the movie Zeitgeist, the middle to the end. For the full article please click on the following link.

By putting forth some tax dollars into television stations, city discussion halls and, of course, the internet, i believe we could make a very pheasable system of direct democracy. Is there any other answer to the ever growing levels of corruption which transform this country from the republic it once was into oligarchy?

Many present India as the next superpower. When I was there, all I saw was poverty, garbage, disease, discrimination, and exploitation. Children are used to clean stopped-up sewer pipes, and to serve as sex workers. More than 25% are illiterate. It's natural resources are being quickly stripped, forests are being cleared, and fertile land is being developed. It's products are poor in quality, and only sold in other developing nations. How in the world can people say its the next superpower?

See the RTBA website for details:

http://www.downsizedc.org/read_the_laws.shtml

Exerpt:

The “Read the Bills Act (RTBA).” RTBA requires that . . .

Each bill, and every amendment, must be read in its entirety before a quorum in both the House and Senate.

Every member of the House and Senate must sign a sworn affidavit, under penalty of perjury, that he or she has attentively either personally read, or heard read, the complete bill to be voted on.

Every old law coming up for renewal under the sunset provisions must also be read according to the same rules that apply to new bills.

Every bill to be voted on must be published on the Internet at least 7 days before a vote, and Congress must give public notice of the date when a vote will be held on that bill.

Passage of a bill that does not abide by these provisions will render the measure null and void, and establish grounds for the law to be challenged in court.

Congress cannot waive these requirements.
