Harry Truman. The buck did stop there.
John F. Kennedy. For his determination for Civil Rights, and well being for the American. He DIDN'T try to stop us from going to Vietnam as someone has replied here. He actually started the escalation.
Ronald Reagan. For his economy genius. That even Clinton benefited from with his so called balanced budget.

Last 20 Years: Ronald Reagan. Without Reagan forcing the U.S.S.R. Into a staggeringly expensive arms race which the USA could afford and he knew the Soviet Economy could not support the Cold War would have never ended. Logically the end of the path the Cold War was leading both nations down was The Road To WW3, Nuclear Armageddon and the death of Mankind. Therefore one could logically say Ronald Reagan saved the world. Last 50 Years: F.D.R. Franklin Delano Roosevelt. F.D.R Basically first, saved America from the economic ravages of the Great Depression with the New Deal and his economic initiatives, and second, under his leadership the USA won WW2 and saved the World from the terrible threat posed by the Axis powers. F.D.R. got more good work done during his tenure as President than almost any other 20 Presidents you could pick combined. The Last 100 Years. Theodore Roosevelt. Teddy Roosevelt was basically the last President to stand up to Big Business and also pretty much the last President to give a damn about the environment.Too bad you didn't say 150 year or I could have covered the best US Prez of all time Abraham Lincoln.Hope this was the kind of answer you were looking for.

IN the last 20 years it is Bill Clinton. No matter how much you hate to hear it, he gained credibility outside the USA regardless of his sex life. The other two periods are the same person. John F Kennedy. There will never be a president who lived through contraversy so much but had the love of a total nation Democrats and Republicans when he was shot down so needlessly. That assassination was felt world wide and will always go down as a mystery. A lot of people still think it was a government planned event ! If so, it is a travesty and if not, we will never know. I am not an American but have relatives that are but I think I can look at all of this with non biased eyes. God bless America the country that gets little credit for doing all it does for others.

The end of the cold war era was largely due to efforts of Reagan.
The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 was for the most part a good bill unfortunatley amended by congress 42 times (at least 3 times by Kennedy) and he had to sign a heavily amended bill to get something to pass. It brought about alot of good things, granted a few bad ones too.

Teddy Roosevelt
Great outdoorsman passed the Antiquities act to preserve national monments

Teddy Roosevelt: He brought many things in to the fold, environment, took the USA in to the world power that has not stopped even with the left today.
Ronald Regan had the ballsss to stand up to the USSR and play on their weakness.
G. Bush II facing down the left on matters such as Islamic Terrorism,Even with the left and Rinos turning on him he does stand fast here.
But he drops the ball on the boarder, and dealing with Mexico.
