is our nation dying?

No. Those of us who are older here or history buffs can assure the younger users we have gone through much tougher times and have survived. Even the resignation of someone like President Nixon would have thrown many nations into chaos, but we moved on. We fought a Civil War and re-united as a stronger nation. We survived a Great Depression and moved almost directly into a massive World War. We have survived years of protests over the Vietnam War that make the current controversy seem minuscule. We endured race riots and fought for equality for many years in the Civil Rights movement. Many folks here lack a sense of American history. Our current Congress is MORE congenial than the 2nd Congress President Washington endured. I believe the greatest issue we have to contend with is the rapid dissemination of information and misinformation over the Internet. We did not read about sexual escapades of FDR or Dwight Eisenhower or JFK. That was beneath us. We have had much tougher times and we have, and will, survive.

Every generation believes that the end is near. Debt, chaos, war, religious extreme groups, and everything else you can pile on has been there since the beginning. Read your history books, bible or koran. Here in the US we have free speach which allows citizens and the free press to keep politians and corporations on their toes. This specific period of time may be bumpy, but smooth road is always just ahead.

It might seems like it, but no. If we can elect Moderates instead of politican's on the far left or far right we will see improvement rather quickly. Given the choices we have with the 2 parties I doubt we will see Moderates.
I have no doubt anyone who runs will get buried unless they belong to a major party but I'm talking with a few people about running myself. Just to see what, if anything will happen, if a working man has a snowballs chance. If your as disgusted as I am, do something. if you know someone that's intelligent, & has some common sense, have them register! It doesn't have to be for President it can be for Congress, but until some people stand up, we will continue to get what we have & that's not good for Us, or the Country.

The way things are going, yes. (5th link below describes how Bush is establishing an imperial presidency)

As danksquish said: "It's written in the constitution that if the government ever becomes out of the view of the people then the people should assemble and re-elect a new government. I say it's about that time"

and I agree completely.

I don't think so, but it has swallowed something vile and will certainly be agonizingly ill for a good long while before it passes.

Should I continue the metaphor to describe what George Bush will be in January of '09?

Human history has seen the rise of many powerful nations. All of these nations have one single thing in common; all of them fell. Our nation began dying the moment it was born just like the rest of us. This is natural and unavoidable. I wouldn't focus so much on whether or not it is dying but rather how do we as Americans and as people and as fathers, mothers and family members survive and rebuild when it does.

Actually, you know what, I can't even think about this right now....because my answer is still yes.

BS_answers, I agree every generation believes that, but eventually one generation is going to be right.

I didn't give anyone thumbs down. I just want to say all the answers are worth thinking about.

That was nice David, you said that beautifully. I'm still worried, but that's keeping what we're dealing with today in perspective.

Thank you labohemianartist!

And remember, the outdated asserting that announces all human beings gave some... some human beings gave all.
