Many present India as the next superpower. When I was there, all I saw was poverty, garbage, disease, discrimination, and exploitation. Children are used to clean stopped-up sewer pipes, and to serve as sex workers. More than 25% are illiterate. It's natural resources are being quickly stripped, forests are being cleared, and fertile land is being developed. It's products are poor in quality, and only sold in other developing nations. How in the world can people say its the next superpower?

How long ago where you there?

And they call it a rising super-power because it has over three times the population of the US, which means even at 25% illiterate (I think those numbers are fairly old) they have more than double as many literate adults. And one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

So, large population, nuclear weapons technology, and a rapidly increasing economy -- good mix for a super-power.

India is not a superpower yet, but it is definitely a regional power and probably stronger than China for a number of reasons:

1) The Indian military is more advanced. Their navy and air force have the ability to project power better than the Chinese. India has had aircraft carriers and long range bombers for decades.

2) The Indian economy is booming and its level of education is increasing.

3) India is located in an interesting position geopolitically. To the west is the Middle East, to the south is the Indian Ocean which it dominates, to the north is China, and to the east is southeast Asia.

I hardly believe you were in India if you thought that India was full of poverty and disease. There is poverty in every country. In America you have ghettos. Because of India's ever growing population, there are sure to be diseases present. I am an Indian girl... born and raised. Obviously, you haven't gone to Bangalore, Ooty, Mysore, Mumbai, Goa.. and all those other specular places. Stop trashing our country with your negative comments. I know you're jealous we are a superpower. Just because we have nuclear power and a fast economy with strict values doesn't mean you can judge it any less.
