Look at all of the people who are swayed by a candidate's stand on abortion. For 30 years GOP candidates have been able to totally play pro-lifers for fools. I could care less about pro-life or pro-choice, but I really do care about issue that effect our country, like wars, deficits, immigration, taxes, corruption and incumbancy. Seriously, why do Americans have to care about this no movement issue.

The city of Hazleton, Pa. offered whopping tax advantages to industry in order to attract
business which would create jobs for its citizens. Apparently this worked very well, and
over 5,000 new jobs were created. The problem with it is that virtually none of the new
jobs went to people already living in Hazleton, but to a mixture of legal and illegal immigrants.

The majority of the new workers in the low paid jobs were from Latin American
countries. Along with them came many new small businesses targeting a Latin American clientell.
As the result of two violent crimes in Hazleton which involved illegals, a law has been passed
which revokes the business license of anyone hiring or renting to an illegal immigrant.

The large businesses hav stated that they don not have illegal workers any more,
so the brunt of the legal action is expected to be (a judge has held up inforcement)
against landlords and small businesses. Enough illegals have left Hazleton that
several small businesses have shut down, blighting the historic old city center
which they had been restoring.

I keep hearing talk that the only ones that are in the military and the only ones fighting our wars are the uneducated, the poor and minorities.
Recently however, after John Kerry said to get an education or get "stuck" in Iraq, I heard a lot of information that differs from this.

Like that the percentage of high school and college graduates is higher in the military than the percentage in the U.S. population, or that there are fewer minorities percentage wise fighting in the war and in enlisted service than the percentage in the U.S. population.
How much of this (from either side) is true? I am interested in hearing opinions from both sides. If someone has stats and or web references with these stats that would be very helpful.

I wonder if there would be merit in a lawsuit filed by a citizen, or maybe even as a class action against the federal govt for not enforcing the immigration laws? If there was merit in such a suit, would you be for or against it? I think class action might work.

I was opposed to going into Iraq but once we did, I kept saying we needed more troops.

Now, 4 years later and a civil war on the brink, what do we do?

Believe it or not, I don't have a set opinion... that's why I am not a politician. :)

I see two options:

1. We send, as some are now recommending, ~150k more troops. Some are suggesting 50k more but I say that if you are going to go for it then why not send enough that you have no doubt is an adequate number.

Would more troops be able to resolve the issues? I think so except how do we control a civil war where we would be put in a position of killing Iraqis that we 'liberated'...?

2. We begin a pull-out of troops. I guess this option would leave it up to the Iraqis to resolve their differences and we just let the cards fall where they may???

Looking for thoughts and opinions on the matter.

Elderly Driver Who Killed 10 Gets Probation
By LINDA DEUTSCH, AP

LOS ANGELES (Nov. 20) - An 89-year-old man whose car hurtled through a farmers market, killing 10 people, was let off on probation Monday by a judge who said he believed the defendant deserved to go prison but was too ill.

George Russell Weller was convicted Oct. 20 of 10 counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence in a case that renewed debate over whether elderly people should lose their driver's licenses.

Weller, confined to a sickbed, was not in court for his sentencing.

Superior Court Judge Michael Johnson said he agreed completely with the jury and called Weller's actions callous and showing "an enormous indifference to human life."

Weller was 86 when his 1992 Buick Le Sabre plowed at freeway speed into the crowded farmers market on July 16, 2003. In addition to the 10 killed, more than 70 people were injured.

Your thoughts on the sentencing of George Weller. Was it fair?
