I rented the movie Ratatouille about a week ago. It pretty funny, but I'm curious, how many of you have seen the movie and actually own a pet rat?

I don't have a rat but I do have 2 dogs. I would like to own a rat but I doubt my Mom will let me get one. They're cute though.

Hi there!I'm a vet student and i found out yesterday my own cat has diabetes. Now I'm supposed to start the insulin shots tommorow, which is fine cause I have given a thousand shots in the past(of course none on my own cat) but I'm really nervous he might get into a hypoglucaemic shock if the level of glucose falls too low(which,as you probably already know is a high risk at the first times you give him the insulin because you can't be absolutely 100% certain of the dose).Everybody is trying to make me feel better and to calm me down but i'm actually really stressed out about it(even though i know how i should handle it if he gets into one) and I thought maybe some experiences from owners who have dealt with the same problem in the past might help me feel a little bit better...boy oh boy I always felt for the stress of the owners when we had to tell them what was wrong with their animals and how they should handle it but these days is the first time I actually KNOW how it feels :(

Considering the inhumane way the animals that end up on the dinner menu are raised and slaughtered, do animal lovers eat the meat from these unfortunate creatures?

Someone told me recently that the main difference between people and animals is that people have a soul and are capable of love, where animals do not have a soul and are not capable of love.

I do know that cats and dogs get attached to their owners. Cats purr when they are being petted. This is affection, and isn't affection a form of love?

The whole idea of "souls" is supernatural by definition (forces or phenomena which are not subject to natural laws), so using that to define whether or not they are capable of love is not a solid proof.

What is your opinion? Are animals capable of love?

A pet that you don't have to buy crickets for, rarely clean the cage/tank, and can take out and hold once in a while? I love reptiles, but it seems the only ones that don't eat crickets are turtles, but they seem hard to take care of. I mean a pet like a rat, but that the cage can be cleaned less often.

I enjoy the company of my cat moreso than my brothers' babies. I get that fuzzy feeling whenever I look at a cute animal but I get nothing out of looking at babies. My family finds it shocking that I would prefer an animal over a human and criticize me for it.

You guys may say that everyone has their own tastes, we're all different, yada yada, but every time they tell me I'm not 'normal' I can't help but feel inhumane...

My family are real bigots when it comes to anything they don't see as 'normal'. I wish I knew how to convince them that just because a person has different feelings doesn't make them crazy...
