Hi,
Without having a necropsy done it is impossible to tell what was wrong with your bunny. With the symptoms you have described it sounds like he went into Gastrointestinal stasis. In future you need to seek veterinary help straight away when a rabbit shows these symptoms. If he had been treated he could have pulled through.
Rabbits instinctively try to hide the fact that they are experiencing pain, but if they are sitting in one place, grinding their teeth, not eating, or appear to be in pain they should be taken to the vet immediately, if not you end up losing your bunny.

You don't say how old he was so we have to guess it wasn't just old age!
The cardboard could have caused a blockage but I think it more likely that coming from a garage it was contaminated. Petrol or oil or paint would be toxic and explain the quickness of the death. (If it had been a blockage it would have been slower) Having access to the garage he could also have eaten something you didn't see.
Sorry for your loss but if you have other rabbits or get another DON'T let them wander around without supervision. Build them a safe run and don't keep them in a garage or shed where there are chemicals of any kind.

I doubt very much that it was the cardboard... they might like to munch but they're not going to eat something that it poisonous. Plus i bet its munched on the cardboard several times as it clearly has access to it.
Unfortunately you didn't give an age but if it was anything over 8 then it was getting on a bit if it was very well cared for - the less well cared for it was the more years you can subtract from that.
If it was ill you wouldn't have known about it until it was very close to death as they hide it well.
Animals like rabbits are also prone to death from shock and they can become shocked from things that humans would just forget about... maybe a dog was at the hutch? Maybe a car screeched past very close by?
The only way to know for sure is to get your vet to have a look.
Sorry for your loss.

Could of been a number of things. The carboard 'could' of been the reason but, im thinking it was more like somethin gmight of been on the cardboard. Paint or a chemical. You siad it was carboard from the garage. Just image all the chemicals and stuff inside a garage.

It could have been a blockage from the cardboard but rabbits can normally chomp their way through most things with no problems, How old was it? Rabbits do have a habit of just turning their toes up for no apparent reason.
Sorry for you loss

If the cardboard did have ink lettering or writing on it that would be the cause of death. This is why vets do not recommend people shred old papers for hamster cages and stuff, the ink gets into there sytstem.

This has happened to me, not with a rabbit but a dog. He was fine one day then the next he could not move or eat. We took him to the vets who told us that some part of his body had ruptured and blood was swimming in his system. They said he we had never took hi he would have died the next day. They told us he had cancer. :( He did'nt last long. But hope that's not what happened to yours.
