First off, inform people on the difference between animal welfare and animal rights.. Most people in general will NOT support animal rights, but, WILL support animal welfare..
Animal rights suggest that animals have equal rights not to be eaten or killed for food or kept as pets for human companionship... Most people will not agree to that as animals kill other animals and certain species have been developed as pets and couldn't survive in the wild.. ..
Animal welfare suggests that animals should be treated well and without cruelty as much as is possible, but, that they can be eaten or kept as pets.
Some examples of animal rights groups would be for instance PETA that holds that no animal should be killed for food and supports the gradual "phasing out" of animals as pets..
An example of animal welfare would be the ASPCA. They recognize that there is a human- animal bond between companion animals and their humans and just encourage better anticruelty laws.. They also believe that vegetarianism should be an individuals choice and not something that is forced upon them by legislation or taxation..
Probably the best way to teach against animal cruelty is to explain the importance of understanding an animal's needs.. From what I've seen, most crimes against animals fall more under 'negligence' rather then actual intentional abuse.. Teaching people to be informed before they get a pet would help to prevent that kind of neglect.. Being informed about puppy mills and how to distinguish between a BYB'er and a responsible breeder would be a good thing too especially this time of year when many will be considering getting a puppy..
Here's a link about responsible breeders and puppymills

Here's some examples of the stances on various things from an animal welfare organization:

I just think it's important for people to understand where they stand first..

Unfortunately there will always be people out there who enjoy, or at least don't have a problem with animal cruelty. While it's likely that this fact will never change, what CAN change is the cruelty toward animals by industry, farming and commercial ventures. People need to be eductated on where the products they buy actually come from. They need to be willing to support the companies that use cruelty free practices in their production, and stop spending any money on those that don't. That's the biggest way we can change these things. Eg - if people didn't buy furs, seals wouldn't be killed. Of course, there are going to be animals that are still killed for food, or culling (kangaroos are not killed for fur - that's a by-product of culling for population control). People are always going to eat meat - it's unrealistic to expect the world to become vegetarian - it just isnt' going to happen any time soon. So, kinder farming methods need to be encouraged, so farmers can still make a living doing the right thing by the animals. Again, essentially, it's up to consumers to do this. If we aren't willing to pay the extra $ to support the more expensive, kinder farming production practices, then farmers will go broke, and cheap imports will take over the market. People aren't powerless - if we care, we CAN change the world for a lot of animals!

You might emphasize the importance of having dogs, cats & some other pets neutered or spayed, as this will prevent millions of unwanted baby animals who would be killed b/c there simply aren't enough homes.
Also, even if ppl are going to eat animals (which I don't), chickens, pigs & other creatures destined to be food should @ least have a decent quality of life before slaughter.
You could also touch upon the cruelty of most product testing & perhaps list some companies who don't test on animals.
Another point could be that companion animals should be considered as part of the family, not as possessions or status symbols, & that when a person adopts a pet this should be a commitment for life.
Good luck on your presentation, it's such a worthwhile topic.

You Can go and look on the Peta Website there will be stuff on this forsure.
these arnt really way to stop animal cruetly but umm yeah
-help out at a local animal shelter, try to find animals good homes where they wont get abused, and also so that the shelter doesnt have to put them down
-dont support ciruses they chain up animals dont alow animals to experence natural behavior. Etc
-Don't buy products that test on animals; is it fair for animals to suffer in pain and not be able to say anything about it? get hair dye dropped into their eyes just to see what happens.
-Go Veg, becomming a vegatarian will save more than 200 animals/year.

have you studied the cruelty statutes for your state? are there some that need improvment? are they enforced consistanty? does your state even have cruelty statutes?
you can't teach compassion & love - they either have it or they don't
