Never saw the film, but I've had rats since BEFORE it came out. You really need to get TWO rats - or more. Rats are social animals that love to sleep all piled up on top of each other. They also groom each other - there's nothing cuter than a pair or group of rats interacting.
Please take into account that the whole time you're away from home (school, work, hobbies, etc.) a single rat would be all alone with nobody to spend time with. Single rats tend to get clingy, neurotic and, in some cases, aggressive. They can also get depressed. Most kids' books out there (Harry Potter, or any other book that has a character who owns a rat) are either outdated, only half correct, or completely incorrect when it comes to info on rats. The same goes for a lot of supposed "rat care" books out there.
You can get honest opinions on rat ownership, as well as correct rat-care info, at this board: http://www.goosemoose.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,118/forum,rat#1

I only saw half of that movie but I have three rats. Ones two years old, ones three months and the other is two months. Out of all the pets I have ever had, but dogs, rats are the best rodent to own. They are so smart. My little ones know their names, go on my shoulder when I tell them, give kisses on command, one can beg when I tell her to, and they are learning how to play soccer. The only bad thing is that they smell and need to be cleaned twice a week to get rid of the smell. Also, they have tons of health problems. My older rats sister was just put to sleep because she had a mammorary tumor (most females get them at two and surgery is $$$). Otherwise they are amazing!

We saw the movie when it came out. It's a cute film & I mostly wanted to see it b/c we do have pet rats-- 2 huge boys that we adopted from a rescue & 3 girls of various ages. They're all awesome little companions & each one has a distinct personality.
I know the main rats in the movie are boys, but 2 of our girls remind me of them-- our hooded girl is like Remy b/c she's very meticulous & orderly (she puts their toys in 1 corner of the cage & her favorite treats in another corner) & our hairless is like Remy's brother, who simply loves to eat & isn't @ all fussy about it.
Rats! Gotta love 'em.

I own two rats...haven't seen the movie yet but my kids want to. Rats are cute, and very intelligent and loving pets compared to hamsters and gerbils...most people are afraid of them and think they are carriers of disease and come from sewers....pet rats are not the same breed as wild rats and rats are not these horrid carriers of diseases...no more than a hamster or other rodent pet.
